From January 8th to 15th, students in The Ohio State University’s Department of Design embarked on a journey of discovery, challenge, craftsmanship, research, and innovation in the 2025 Design Charrette.  https://lnkd.in/eYXk3Bi6

In the annual Industrial Design Charrette, students from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years are grouped together and given a prompt that challenges them to apply their design skills to a different discipline. For the fifth iteration this year, the prompt centered on Foley — creating objects that replicate sounds from an assigned video clip. https://lnkd.in/emFZrHDF

Breaking Bias and Clichés in AI-Driven Visual Design Visual Communication Design students from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years kicked off the Spring 2025 semester with a week-long Design Charrette exploring the impact of AI-generated imagery on cultural diversity and creativity. Through critical analysis, collaborative exercises, and hybrid design approaches, students worked together to challenge stereotypes, reframe prompts, and create innovative visual solutions that champion inclusivity and originality. The event featured guest judges from local design firms, many of whom are proud alumni of the program, reinforcing the department’s strong industry connections. This charrette exemplifies how the design program and the design field evolve alongside emerging technologies—not only adopting new tools but also critically examining their societal implications. By engaging with technology thoughtfully, designers can push boundaries, foster inclusivity, and create a future driven by innovation and human creativity.

Three professors in the program — assistant professor William Nickley and associate professors Amanda Huynh and Sébastien Proulx — have won education awards from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) in the past three years. https://lnkd.in/eEtQb6bp

The future of design is here—and it's immersive, interactive, and wildly creative!  The Ohio State University is proud to introduce a groundbreaking new undergraduate major in Experiential Media Design (XMD). The new major aims to prepare the next generation of professional designers to thrive in the sectors of extended reality, interactive entertainment, immersive media production, exhibitions, and gaming.
