Congratulations to Joseph Heremans, who has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Inventors 2024 class of fellows! 🏆 The NAI Fellowship is the highest professional distinction awarded solely to inventors. The 2024 class comprises 170 researchers from 135 research universities, governmental and nonprofit research institutions worldwide. Heremans has more than 40 U.S. patents and groundbreaking contributions to technology — from tunable infrared lasers to magnetic sensors in millions of GM engines. His impact spans academia, industry, and entrepreneurship, making Ohio State proud to celebrate one of their newest NAI fellows. 💡💡💡 Three professors at The Ohio State University have been elected as members of the National Academy of Inventors 2024 class of fellows.  The newest NAI fellows from Ohio State are Joseph Heremans, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and an Ohio Eminent Scholar in Nanotechnology, and two retired professors: 2023 Nobel Laureate Pierre Agostini, professor emeritus of physics, and Longya Xu, who recently retired as professor of electrical and computer engineering after more than 30 years on the faculty. After months of preparation and teamwork, the Theme Park Engineering Ohio State team (Ryan Balogh, Audrey Nelson, Arianna DiMenna, Connor Foster, & Aaron Ligator) participated in the Universal Creative competition, hosted at Universal Orlando Resort in late November! They tackled several challenges focused on various aspects of the themed entertainment industry, including designing interactive and novel rides. The competition was fierce, featuring 21 other universities from across North America. It was also Ohio State’s first time competing, making it even more special. Team members had the privilege of presenting designs to Universal Creative executives, who gave invaluable feedback. Plus, they had the opportunity to explore Universal’s theme parks for research and fun. Highlights include: - Successfully presenting Ohio State team’s first design and being recognized for technical communication - Applying concepts from the classroom to real-world design challenges - Learning from industry pros and meeting passionate students from across the country The entire experience was a massive success from both a learning perspective and as a team. The Buckeyes are taking to the sky! This time they are in pursuit of designing and building a novel autonomous drone aimed at rescue and humanitarian missions. The new student organization, The Sloopy Works | GoAERO, is participating in the global GoAERO challenge, with the goal of creating the world’s first compact, autonomy-enabled air rescue vehicle that is safe and simple to fly.
