Educating mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineers | Performing innovative research
About us
The Ohio State University College of Engineering Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering educates mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineers. We offer bachelor's degrees in mechanical engineering and aeronautical and astronautical engineering, and master's and doctoral degrees in mechanical, nuclear, and aeronautical and astronautical engineering. Our $72.5 million building complex, the Peter L. and Clara M. Scott Laboratory, opened in 2006 and includes 14 modern classrooms and high-quality space for research laboratories. Departmental instructional and research activities include advanced transportation systems (automotive and aerospace), energy and environmental quality, materials and manufacturing, micro- and nanotechnology, nuclear energy, and bioengineering. In July 2010, the Department of Mechanical Engineering completed a merger with the Department of Aerospace Engineering. This recent merger caps a rich history of progress in the disciplines of mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineering. We are proud of the extensive research programs and facilities that exist within the department. Our faculty adhere to the philosophy that true innovation depends upon the cooperation of academia, industry, and government working together to advance the goals of science and technology. Strong research relationships exist with the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA Glenn Research Center, and GE Aviation. Department faculty also provide leadership for the OSU Nuclear Reactor Lab, SIMCenter, Center for Automotive Research, the Center for Precision Forming and the Smart Vehicle Center; the latter two being NSF Industry and University Cooperative Research Centers.

After months of preparation and teamwork, the Theme Park Engineering Ohio State team (Ryan Balogh, Audrey Nelson, Arianna DiMenna, Connor Foster, & Aaron Ligator) participated in the Universal Creative competition, hosted at Universal Orlando Resort in late November! They tackled several challenges focused on various aspects of the themed entertainment industry, including designing interactive and novel rides. The competition was fierce, featuring 21 other universities from across North America. It was also Ohio State’s first time competing, making it even more special. Team members had the privilege of presenting designs to Universal Creative executives, who gave invaluable feedback. Plus, they had the opportunity to explore Universal’s theme parks for research and fun. Highlights include: - Successfully presenting Ohio State team’s first design and being recognized for technical communication - Applying concepts from the classroom to real-world design challenges - Learning from industry pros and meeting passionate students from across the country The entire experience was a massive success from both a learning perspective and as a team. Shoutout to the Ohio State team for taking on the challenge and showing off what it means to be a Buckeye Engineer. #ThemedEntertainment #UniversalCreative #OhioState #ThemeParkDesign #EngineeringInAction #LearningByDoing #Teamwork #FutureDesigners
