Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems

About us

CODE is a coalition of companies that believe open digital ecosystems are better for businesses, consumers and society. We aim to foster collaboration among academics, consumers, companies, policymakers and startups in a collective effort to exchange ideas that encourage and embed the principles of openness. This will, in turn, help drive a thriving European digital economy, in which consumers have more choice, technological lock-in belongs to the past, and businesses can innovate.

  • 📣  Europe’s tech ecosystem has vast potential, but unlocking it requires full commitment to openness and interoperability  📣 The State of European Tech 2024 highlights a €375 billion growth funding gap in the region. At CODE, we fundamentally believe in the power of #OpenDigitalEcosystems to tackle this deficit and drive a thriving digital economy in Europe. 💡 Interoperability fosters innovation by enabling cross-industry collaboration and ensuring developers and hardware manufacturers can build without barriers. A commitment to interoperability isn’t just about fixing today’s challenges—it’s about creating a foundation for Europe to lead the next wave of global tech innovation. Europe can take the first step with effective #DMA enforcement 🇪🇺 ➡️  https://lnkd.in/dQK__DQq #SoET2024

🇪🇺 Yesterday’s hearings of Commissioners-designate Henna Virkkunen and Teresa Ribera underscored the importance of fostering a competitive European digital economy through effective enforcement of existing frameworks. At CODE, we are encouraged by these commitments and look forward to working constructively with the European Commission to ensure that enforcement supports a fair and innovation-driven economy. ➡️ However, we observed a missed opportunity to emphasise a critical pillar of fair competition: #interoperability The EU has the tools to build an interoperable ecosystem of digital products and services. A focus on swift and rigorous #DMA compliance is now essential to ensure that businesses, consumers and society can reap the benefits of open innovation. We stand ready to collaborate with the Commission to ensure that effective interoperability becomes a cornerstone of Europe’s digital leadership. #OpenDigitalEcosystems #DigitalMarketsAct #FairCompetition #Innovation

As the hearings of the new Commissioners-designate commence, we call on Members of the European Parliament for support in shaping Europe’s digital future towards greater openness, competitiveness, and consumer empowerment. Now is the time to reinforce the principles of the #DigitalMarketsAct (DMA). Consumers deserve more choice, businesses need interoperability to innovate, and Europe must strengthen its global competitiveness. ➡️ To achieve this, it is crucial that the Commissioners-designate are reminded of the need for effective, timely, and proportionate DMA enforcement. We urge the European Parliament to advocate for strong compliance that will foster #OpenDigitalEcosystems for all. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e6MeaSxu #DMA #Innovation #Competition #ConsumerChoice

  • This #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth, CODE is foregrounding the vital relationship between openness and security. ➡ It is a common misconception that closed systems are always more secure, simply because their inner workings are hidden. True security should not depend on secrecy but on the robustness of the security mechanisms themselves. By being open, systems can build greater trust with users and stakeholders, who can verify security measures directly. This transparency is especially important in sectors where trust and compliance are critical, such as healthcare and finance. Openness and security are not mutually exclusive. #OpenDigitalEcosystems prioritise both values to offer consumers, businesses and society a digital experience which champions choice, innovation, competition, and safety with equal importance. • The #DigitalMarketsAct has already delivered significant benefits, proving that consumer choice and innovation flourish in environments where ecosystems are open and fair. Users are gradually enjoying more options, and businesses are innovating without being confined to restrictive systems 💪 . ❗ However, the full promise of #openness must materialise across all critical platforms—ensuring equitable opportunities for everyone. It’s essential that the application of the #DMA remains consistent, addressing the needs of the entire digital landscape, from smartphones to connected devices, and everything in between. At CODE, we advocate for an inclusive and #interoperable digital ecosystem where consumers can freely choose their devices, apps, and services without being locked into a single ecosystem. By pushing for openness, we’re ensuring that innovation can thrive, competition remains healthy, and users are always at the centre of the digital experience. The DMA is a great first step, but its vision must be realised comprehensively to create truly #OpenDigitalEcosystems which drive a thriving European Digital Economy 🇪🇺 .

  • Consumers should have the freedom to choose their devices, apps, and services with ease. How? #Interoperability. Common interoperability standards ensure that users can seamlessly navigate across platforms and operating systems—whether that be for messaging, making payments, or connecting wearables. ➡️ The EU must push for data portability standards, device switching initiatives, and efforts to enhance cross-platform compatibility. 🇪🇺 When we foster #ConsumerChoice, we drive the next wave of innovation in Europe. • We’re encouraged to see iOS 18 introduce enhanced messaging features, addressing long-standing frustrations with high-resolution media sharing, group chats and message receipts 👏 👏 . However, true innovation lies in full #interoperability which champions #security for all.  For a fully open and secure messaging experience, adopting the full RCS standard—including encryption, spam protection, and seamless cross-platform capabilities—would greatly benefit consumers. At CODE, we believe that openness should be at the core of every ecosystem, empowering users with real choice and enhanced security. Let’s build a digital future where messaging knows no boundaries. #OpenDigitalEcosystems #RCS #Apple #iMessage https://lnkd.in/ejCf8X5m
