Peter Kelly, OPENLANE's CEO, breaks down everything you need to know about the evolving wholesale market for 2025: 🚙 How using tech leads to more success 🚙 Pricing trends 🚙 Auction strategies for higher returns And more — all in the latest Car Dealership Guy podcast. Stream below. ⬇️
The 2025 wholesale car market explained: Recently on the Car Dealership Guy Podcast, I spoke with Peter Kelly, Co-Founder, President and CEO of OPENLANE US, to discuss how the wholesale car market finished off 2024, how volume trends are bucking expectations, and the key trends and challenges facing the segment this year. Top lessons learned from Peter: 1. Using tech to its full potential. – The better their customer experience, the more successful dealerships are likely to be. – With competition being so intense, maximizing one’s use of technology will be key to outshining others. 2. How are wholesale prices trending? – While tax refund season usually brings a small boost in pricing, one to four-year-old vehicles are in short supply. – This supply deficit, combined with strong-than-expected pricing trends over the course of 2024, suggests used car prices could rise higher than usual in the months ahead. 3. Low inventory = higher prices. – For the rest of 2025, wholesale volumes are likely to remain constrained. – Supply levels are still too low to meet demand, a fact that will also contribute to higher wholesale prices. – However, dealers are likely to see an explosion in wholesale inventory starting next year, along with a sizable decline in prices. 4. 2025 strengths and challenges. – In the broader car market, analysts suggest 2025 is going to be a strong year for retailers. – Sales volumes are on the rise, thanks to higher incentives and more inventory. – The biggest variables are tariffs—this could undo some of the progress that has been made. 5. Attracting buyers and boosting prices. – Notifying buyers when a seller is guaranteed to sell their vehicle tends to drive prices higher. – Since buyers know the vehicle is going to sell, the notification starts a new wave of bidding. – That leads to an average price increase of $600 to $700 before the auction ends.
