    Host and Creator, Power Station

A few quotes from my Power Station Podcast conversation with pro-democracy champions Gan Golan and Alan Jenkins: "I love comic books and I love democracy and it seemed like a comic book would be one vehicle for helping to defend democracy." "This election is one of the first where a majority of voters said their primary source of news and information was friends and families." "Resistance and survival live in our heads and imagination just as much as they live in policy and our politics." If you have not yet read 1/6, the graphic novel that reimagines what could have happened if the January 6, 2021 attempt at insurrection had been successful, please listen to my interview with Gan Golan and Alan Jenkins and order the comic book series from OneSixComics! Their collaboration with a long roster of incredibly talented artists and researchers, including illustrator Will Rosado (William Rosado Illustration LLC) has generated a powerful and striking look into the minds and hearts of those who were there. It also demonstrates that comic books, which historically have been a vehicle for standing up to authoritarianism and hate, speak to all of us. At a time when many Americans, inundated by misinformation, cannot distinguish fact from fiction, we have to uplift the truth tellers, like Alan and Gan, and embrace more effective and inclusive modes of communication. 1/6 has garnered support from a Kickstarter campaign, Surdna Foundation, Ford Foundation, Kettering Foundation Western States Center (which has published an essential action guide) and more. If you often find yourself stumbling through conversations with friends or family about difficult topics – maybe even crashing and burning – then you may want to check out this helpful guide from The Opportunity Agenda. So many helpful pointers. And number 4, "Use Stories, Not Just Facts," resonated strongly. It's by sharing our stories (and listening to other people's stories) that we might be able to connect despite our differences. 🤝 https://lnkd.in/dDsWSBma #communication #communications

So how can we harness the power of pop culture to challenge harmful narratives, reshape beliefs, and ignite action for justice? In "Homelander for President," we'll explore how storytelling can break down biases, foster empathy, and mobilize audiences. Together, we’ll examine the striking parallels between the real world and characters like Homelander from The Boys who manipulate public opinion and thrive on division. Porshea Patterson-Hurst, TOA’s Research Manager, will speak with fellow social justice creatives including: - Maytha Alhassen, writer/producer, journalist, professor  - Gan Golan, New York Times bestselling author and artist, co-author of "1/6: The Graphic Novel" - Alan Jenkins, Founder of The Opportunity Agenda, Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School, co-author of "1/6: The Graphic Novel" Let's talk how media and pop culture, like The Boys, hold up a mirror to society and challenge the status quo.
