My main take-aways: 👍 Overall, worldwide, public transport is in fairly good shape with ridership almost recovered from the bump of COVID-19 (average -10% on the cities we monitor worldwide at UITP), a continuous trend of opening new networks, being light rail or bus rapid transit (BRT), a very clear direction into more and more zero-emissions deployments worldwide. 🤔 However, mobility demand and supply have changed as well as external conditions (anyone say climate adaptation or cybersecurity?) - as James put it: "The world has changed, things are not gonna go back to normal, we are now acknowledging reality". 🎯 That's why adjusting with agility the PT offer is crucial with network redesign and priority measures to increase efficiency and make PT more attractive. Software, data and AI can help. On the lower spectrum of demand, Demand-responsive transport (DRT) deployments tick both the flexibility box as well as the attractivity box. ⚠️🖼️But this is not enough! In a world with a clear need to transition away from the harms of car-dependency, we need to provide a seamless travel experience for all by expanding and integrating multimodal PT-based systems with complementary shared and on-demand services, built on a solid layer of good conditions for walking, wheeling and cycling. Working for this wider picture can greatly benefit people, public transport itself, the society, the economy and the environment. 🫴For this, because PT doesn't exist in a vacuum but it's strictly connected to our changing life, my personal advice for the sector is to adopt an open approach to cooperation and partnerships to overcome challenges together with authorities, industry, operators, also of shared and on-demand services. 🧭The compass for cooperation should be to meet the needs of people and the enabler should be data, both to objectivise the dialogue and to accelerate and adjust implementations. 🙏 So, on my side, I am grateful to be working on the stimulating challenges of multimodality and combined mobility at UITP.. 👉...and if you are in the shared and on-demand mobility business (also from a PTO or a PTA side), we have dedicated communities of members that you may want to know more about (in a personal message ;-)
