“Let us foster representation, embrace our cultures, educate our communities, uplift our neighbors, and encourage the continuing celebration of Black Excellence.” #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryAllYear
On Friday I had the honor and privilege to see a project I’ve been organizing come to life. New Hope Elementary had its FIRST Black Excellence Festival in honor of Black history month. We had student and community performers dazzle our stage with amazing talent! Along with graffiti walls, and craft stations to make drums, kente cloths, and beats! Local Black-owned businesses set up as a mini-market in our gym, along with Black owned food trucks outside! We also had a pop up nail salon and a barber shop giving free services to our community! Our kids participated in volleyball and cheer/step clinics sponsored by Duke Volleyball and UNC’s Blue Lightning Stomp & Cheer team. We showcased collaborative school wide student art pieces based on the work of Alma Thomas. Our amazing PTSA sponsored Black History trivia for prizes, and a raffle of books by Black authors, and gifts/gift certificates from Black owned businesses in the community! A live wax museum where our students portrayed Black pioneers & revolutionaries! I could not have made it happen without the support & dedication of our school staff, PTSA, our beloved students, families, volunteers, & businesses. I am beyond grateful for our school community entrusting me with leading this phenomenal event. Let us foster representation, embrace our cultures, educate our communities, uplift our neighbors, and encourage the continuing celebration of Black Excellence. #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #blackhistorymonth2024 #schoolsocialwork #everykideveryday #communityengagement #blackjoy #excellenceineducation #socialworker #eventmanagement #thrivingtogether #unc #chapelhill #projectmanagement #revolutionary #education #embracechange #studentengagement #familyengagement #communityoutreach #success #representationmatters #uplift #celebratediversity University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill UNC School of Social Work Orange County Schools
