Cardiovascular disease (CVD) was responsible for 35% of total deaths in women in 2019. Despite its high mortality rate, cardiovascular disease remains understudied, under-recognized, under-diagnosed, and under-treated in women. A World Economic Forum report highlights that current health data often miss key women’s health issues. This lack of data can potentially result in missed opportunities to improve the lives of women and girls, especially in vulnerable groups. It can also lead to underestimating health problems, affecting care and investment in women’s health. For example, women’s pain is often under-treated compared to men’s, leading to worse outcomes. Incomplete data can widen the health gap between men and women. To help close the gap, Organon is working to spark collective action to deliver a new era in healthcare that empowers women globally by investing in research and innovation.

Our next feature in “Minds Behind the Science” spotlights Allison Armstrong, PhD, an Asset Development Team Leader at Organon who oversees the strategic development of new therapies. From early inspirations in science and rare diseases to driving real-world change in women’s health, Allison’s work is centered around empathy, passion, and innovation. Her journey from drug discovery to clinical development began with a pivotal moment early in her career when she attended a patient and family caregiver meeting for rare pediatric metabolic diseases. From that point, her work wasn’t just about the science; it was about the patients living with these diseases every day. Today, her team is working on a program that aims to bring more treatment options to women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)—a condition which affects an ‘estimated 8–13% of women of reproductive age, and up to 70% of affected women remain undiagnosed worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). “Everyone you talk to at Organon has this drive to improve the treatment options available for women’s health conditions,” Allison says. Listen to how her teamwork-centered approach helps drive innovation at Organon, where the focus is always on delivering important therapies to patients around the world. #MindsBehindTheScience #WomenInScience #PolycysticOvarySyndrome #PCOS #WomensHealth
