Dr. Charlotte Owens, MD, FACOG, Organon’s Head of Medical Affairs & Outcomes Research, spoke at the #FierceBiotechSummit on the topic of Empowering Women’s Health through Biotech Innovation and Research. The discussion focused on the impact investment in women’s health can have on society as a whole. Increasing awareness of women’s health, including and beyond sexual and reproductive health, can not only help women thrive but also help their families, communities, and economies. Our mini mic team met Dr. Owens afterwards to get her key takeaways. #WomensHealth #Biotech24 Fierce Life Sciences Events

Our next feature in “Minds Behind the Science” spotlights Allison Armstrong, PhD, an Asset Development Team Leader at Organon who oversees the strategic development of new therapies. From early inspirations in science and rare diseases to driving real-world change in women’s health, Allison’s work is centered around empathy, passion, and innovation. Her journey from drug discovery to clinical development began with a pivotal moment early in her career when she attended a patient and family caregiver meeting for rare pediatric metabolic diseases. From that point, her work wasn’t just about the science; it was about the patients living with these diseases every day. Today, her team is working on a program that aims to bring more treatment options to women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)—a condition which affects an ‘estimated 8–13% of women of reproductive age, and up to 70% of affected women remain undiagnosed worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). “Everyone you talk to at Organon has this drive to improve the treatment options available for women’s health conditions,” Allison says. Listen to how her teamwork-centered approach helps drive innovation at Organon, where the focus is always on delivering important therapies to patients around the world. #MindsBehindTheScience #WomenInScience #PolycysticOvarySyndrome #PCOS #WomensHealth

The Misses of Health Information are back to break down the cost of being a woman. The first step toward understanding this impact is widening our definition of women’s health. At Organon, we believe women’s health is far too narrowly defined, as many definitions reduce women’s health needs to reproductive health only. Our definition encompasses the health of the whole woman across her life as some women’s health conditions may be interconnected with others. #MissesofHealthInformation #MissDiagnosis #MissInformation #HealthEquity #WomensHealth

Misinformation about contraception and reproductive care is a growing health concern. Confusion, information overload, and myths flood our screens, feeds and conversations on a daily basis which can influence the decision-making process. Inaccurate information can potentially contribute to higher unintended pregnancy rates and misunderstandings about birth control – this can be detrimental to women and their community. Part of Organon’s aim is to help ensure quality care and fact-based access to information for women and girls. By educating about reproductive health, we strive to inspire, empower, and uplift.
