Generally, when people think of the work a Public Information Officer, or “PIO,” does for a public safety agency, it’s often doom and gloom-related unfortunately.   Press releases on natural disasters. Working with media outlets to get additional eyes on a suspect-at-large. Or commenting on the discipline or termination of a department member. Although necessary sometimes, it’s not the most fun work.   What we REALLY enjoy doing is crafting and managing the brand presence of your public service agency or service business, especially with tailored strategies. When it comes to connecting with your community, followers, or customers, it’s our feeling that you should be yourself and be true to your brand.   We love working with clients that like to have some fun with their social media and are earnestly looking to make connections with their followers. “We know that we need to be active on social media and tell people about us...but we don't want to do it wrong." We hear that a lot, and it's fair. Working with entrepreneurs and law enforcement professionals means we are in the presence of “Type A” people constantly (also, guilty). Both professions require the ability to adapt quickly, keep an eye on all the moving parts, and have a backup plan (for your backup plan). But sometimes you just have to START. It’s difficult to know what works and what doesn’t if you never start. So, to those who are planning…and planning…and planning, that’s great. But these are not mutually exclusive things. You can start solidifying who you are to your community and followers AND continue laying the groundwork. When you’re not sure if the social media post you’ve been making for an hour is going to be worth it to post or not. Just remember that “Perfection” isn’t the standard…”Consistency” is. If you’re brand new to doing your own social media and marketing, spend some time on the channels you’d like to advertise on. Don’t copy someone else’s ad or social media post verbatim…but it should inspire some ideas. And if that idea falls flat just remember that social media is fleeting. There’s always tomorrow and between now and then, there will have been tens of thousands of related posts. When it feels like there’s too many choices and you’re paralyzed. Breathe, do that “hmmmmmmmmm” thing (it probably helps) and just remember that “Perfection” isn’t the standard…”Consistency” is.
