The Buckeyes are taking to the sky! This time they are in pursuit of designing and building a novel autonomous drone aimed at rescue and humanitarian missions. The new student organization, The Sloopy Works | GoAERO, is participating in the global GoAERO challenge, with the goal of creating the world’s first compact, autonomy-enabled air rescue vehicle that is safe and simple to fly. Last week the center welcomed a delegation focused on regional and state aerospace development. Representative Adam Holmes, 97th Ohio House District and chair of the state’s Aviation and Aerospace Committee, was joined by retired Air Force Colonel Joe Zeis, the governor’s senior advisor for aerospace and defense, and Elaine Bryant, the Dayton Development Coalition’s executive vice president of aerospace and defense and JobsOhio’s managing director of military federal sector. Thank you for your visit! The center aims to be a resource for industry, academia, government labs and other organizations to collaborate on complex research challenges. The successful candidate will establish a vibrant research program which complements the Aerospace Research Center’s related strengths and capabilities. Now launching: New hypersonics research pillar 🚀 With decades of combined experience, experts from multiple labs are converging to improve flights at Mach 5 and above for both national security and commercial applications. They aim to provide impactful solutions across a broad range of hypersonics topics, from basic to applied. Story linked in comments. Specialization areas encompass: - Aerothermodynamics - Guidance navigation control - Hypersonic environments - Materials - Structures - Propulsion   Novel facilities include the Large Area Reflected Shock (LARS) Tunnel (pictured here 📸), the largest university-operated hypersonic wind tunnel in the nation. It complements several smaller-scale wind tunnels and other specialized equipment. Secure, high-performance computing is accessible through a partnership with Ohio Supercomputer Center.   Students are central to Ohio State’s hypersonics research.
