Changing lives. Overcoming poverty together.
About us
Outreach Uganda is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering impoverished communities in Uganda, with a focus on women and children. Our mission is driven by initiatives in income-generation, education, and community development. Key programs include: Education: We help fund a community primary/nursery school with over 700 students and a Girls' Education Initiative supporting over 150 girls in grades three through six, aiming to motivate and support their academic achievement, We have over 200 children sponsored so they can attend school including some students who have advanced to the vocational or university level. Over 50 sponsored students have graduated from school. Healthcare: We provide contributions for nurses' salaries and medicines at an adjacent community clinic. This clinic provides essential medical services to over 5,000 individuals across five villages. Community Support: We manage a home-building project which will benefit up to 40 women in the Jinja area. Income-Generation: Our program focuses on training Ugandan women in two community-based groups in business and farming skills to help them establish small-scale businesses or cash crop farming ventures. We also sell fair trade crafts in the U.S. which provides additional funds to the women making the products and helps fund the additional community level projects. Our integrated approach since our founding in 2007 ensures comprehensive support for education, health, and economic empowerment in the regions we serve. We are funded primarily by individual and business contributions and a few small grants. We welcome inquiries from all who are interested in helping us in our mission!

The third term of the Uganda school year started this week. We hope the 710 students at the Agwata community school we help support plus the additional 100 secondary and above students that are receiving scholarships this year have a great term and do well on year end exams. A BIG thank you to our sponsors and donors for making this investment in the lives of each one of these students!

We're reminded once again of the importance of our work in northern Uganda. The latest IPC* report highlights the dire food insecurity in Lamwo district, where the community school and clinic that we partner with are located. Nearly 45% of households are in crisis or emergency stages, facing severe hunger and malnutrition. 🌍 Our response is not new or a one-time emergency. Since 2010, when families resettled their ancestral lands after a 20-year conflict, Lamwo has been in urgent need of support. We’ve been addressing these needs by providing microloans for cash crop agriculture to local women—many of whom are parents of the children at our school, and through nutrition programs at the school. The microloans empower the women to grow their own food and enhance their families’ nutrition. The photo shows these incredible women working the fields with an ox team, showcasing their dedication and resilience. We welcome donor support which directly contributes to alleviating severe food shortages and sustaining the school's nutrition programs. 💚 * Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) #OutreachUganda #FoodSecurity #Malnutrition #SupportWomen #Nonprofit #EndHunger #GlobalImpact

Check out this insightful piece by Eric Liu in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, "Can 50 Nonprofits Build Something Together? A Hopeful Idea Begins to Spread." It explores the potential of enhanced mutual aid and how this approach could revolutionize the work of U.S. nonprofits internationally, such as Outreach Uganda. Imagine the possibilities if we applied this collaborative model to our initiatives in Africa and beyond! We’d love to hear your thoughts on how this concept could be implemented. We are grateful for the recent visit from the Uganda Ministry of Health epidemiology team to the community health center in Agwata, supported in part by Outreach Uganda donor contributions. Located in Lamwo district, northern Uganda, near the South Sudan border, Agwata is located in one of the few Uganda districts still grappling with river blindness. To get a glimpse of the impactful work being done, watch the video captured by our dedicated project staff last week. #Healthcare #CommunitySupport #UgandaHealthcare #GlobalHealthcare #PublicHealth
