Take a peek at one of our latest living shoreline collaborations: This one is at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and utilizes 564 small "Wave Slope" ExoForm units over 1,675 linear feet along with two other partner solutions: QuickReef by Native Shorelines and Oyster Catchers by Sandbar Oyster Company - all constructed by TD Eure Marine Construction and funded by the North Carolina Coastal Federation. The project will stabilize the marsh and shoreline located along Bogue Sound, provide habitat for marine organisms, and support ongoing coastal resilience. What's very cool about this one is that Eastern Carolina University will monitor the changing health of the marsh and seagrasses as oysters, fish, and other marine life begin to thrive in this new living shoreline habitat. Exciting times at Phinite as the company moves into their next-generation fertilizer manufacturing facility in Turkey, NC. This repurposed 69,000 square foot facility will significantly increase Phinite's organic fertilizer production capacity, create new jobs in North Carolina, and begin tackling the critical issues of swine waste removal/remediation and sustainable production of phosphorous-rich organic fertilizer. Additionally, the company will soon leverage over $12mm of recent commitments from local farmers to build multiple distributed swine waste drying systems across North Carolina. These distributed facilities are the first step of Phinite's proprietary process of converting hog waste into organic fertilizer. I'm incredibly proud of the team at Axil Health for going above and beyond in the wake of Hurricane Helene, with many team members making personal sacrifices to ensure continued care for their patients. When many physical healthcare facilities were forced to close due to flooding and power loss, the team at Axil Health continued to provide critical care and remote support to their patients in Western North Carolina. The Axil team delivered physical supplies and avoided downtime in their care coordination and remote patient monitoring services, ensuring that those in need received timely medical attention even when most physical healthcare infrastructure was compromised. Disasters like Hurricane Helene, which are becoming more and more common even in the least expected places, highlight the importance of innovative remote care coordination solutions. Thank you to the Axil Health team for your dedication to patient care continuity during the recent weeks. Your efforts are a reminder of how technology-driven solutions can make healthcare more resilient and accessible. cc: Ritesh Patel, CPP, CDCES, BC-ADM, Vish Patel, Andrew Blum, PharmD, CPP, CDCES, BC-ADM, Dwight Hallman, Penny Shikowitz, Ryan M. Great event this week pitching our Nature Tech story at Venture Atlanta Conference this week. Shout out to the volunteer pitch coaches and mentors at VA as well as Maureen Huguley, our The Idea Village buddy who helped us distill down a funky reef business into 3 crisp minutes... not easy! It is great to see the growth equity ecosystem thriving in the southeast, and see some of our investors like Front Porch Venture Partners and Oval Park Capital in the thick of things!

President at SBT | 18 years of advising leaders in the semiconductor industry and architecting teams from startups to F500 companies

“Why are hardware companies STILL chasing power when software is the real game-changer?” That thought played on repeat in my head while hearing Jay Dawani present at the #AIHardwareSummit. There were a handful of presentations I saw before his, and a common theme was superlatives like “fastest and “largest”. With AI in a growth cycle unlike anything we’ve seen, many of the hardware companies have a “gold rush” mentality now – they’re ready to find a claim and dig. I gravitate toward people who look at opportunities from different perspectives, which is why I was eager for Jay’s talk. I’m always blown away by how he doesn’t just think outside the box, he reimagines a box from first principles. When he took the stage, the backdrop read, “Agnostic Software for AI Workloads – Decoupling Software From Hardware” and he started off with asking: “has anyone ever tried to get to know the developers?”. Looking around, I saw a few people nodding in agreement and others who looked puzzled. Maybe they thought it was rhetorical but it clearly struck a chord and everyone had to confront the reality that those who code for AI hardware are often overlooked. Jay then exposed the futility of trying to advance AI through hardware alone saying, “Models are increasing in size exponentially with no foreseeable slowdown. Physical buildouts of data centers will only give us 10% of the capacity we need in the next decade and even at full capacity, ALL the fabs in the world won’t be able to produce the amount of hardware required.” In short, any company trying to win on hardware alone is like participating in a zero-sum game. A handful will get rich in the process, but all the effort will have made but a dent in bringing the transformative potential of AI to the world. Jay described his view, saying, “We need to consider large scale hardware-software codesign across the entire industry, and our goal is that MORE people can use MORE types of hardware, faster.” then he dove into their solution: a software stack that integrates PyTorch and allows developers to run it on any hardware at any scale and transition seamlessly from training to inference. Instead of trying to beat the market, Jay and Lemurian Labs will lift the ENTIRE market, starting with those whose lives and work will be the most transformed – the developers. It takes courage to pivot and I’m proud of Jay; he’s done it twice in pursuit of the right path which speaks volumes about him publicly living his virtue of “Failure as Rocket Fuel”, though I would hardly count pivoting as a failure. Others believe in Jay as much I do. Investors are showing their confidence with funding and respected leaders looking to make their mark on AI have joined from big companies. My advice to engineers and developers who have the same ambition, don’t sleep on roles at Lemurian. You’ll regret it if the next time you pay attention to them is when you’re using their software stack. #semiconductorindustry #artificialintelligence
