Over Zero
Civic and Social Organizations
Supporting leaders and communities to prevent, resist, and rise above identity-based violence.
About us
Over Zero was founded in response to the global need to counteract and prevent identity-based violence and other forms of group-targeted harm. We emerged as an outgrowth of Sisi ni Amani International, an organization founded to strengthen local violence prevention efforts through leveraging communication-based tools. Our interdisciplinary and cross-sector approach contributes to the broader field of identity-based violence prevention. Over Zero’s programming is focused on the United States, Central Europe, and engagement with the wider atrocity prevention field. Our work is rooted in a commitment to field-building: developing the connective tissue, trust, and shared understanding across actors, approaches, disciplines, and geographies that are facing common issues or challenges. Our model supports and convenes diverse stakeholders, from local NGOs to community leaders and organizers from directly affected communities, researchers, and philanthropy; draws on their perspectives and knowledge; supports them in leveraging their unique platforms and skills; and engages them in collective problem-solving and strategy design. We also support high-impact organizations and networks in programmatic design and evaluation, and advise leaders and institutions that influence the field, including philanthropy. Underlying this work is a commitment to cutting-edge, interdisciplinary and cross-sector research that is both responsive to real-world needs and can enhance practical responses to conflict risks.

As we approach Pride month, Over Zero has released a new report: Decoding LGBTQ Scapegoating. This report explores the connection between two escalating crises: the systematic targeting of LGBTQ communities and democratic backsliding worldwide. It examines how the rhetorical, political, and physical attacks targeting the LGBTQ community are, in addition to a critical rights issue, a central component of the authoritarian playbook, cloaking themselves as culture war politics as usual. LGBTQ scapegoating is not random. It is not a natural consequence of polarization or an expected backlash to rights advancements, but rather a strategy to deepen divisions and erode democracy. You can find the report, an abridged version, and a snapshot of how this is unfolding in the U.S. here: https://lnkd.in/eCi_Rs6d Very grateful to have partnered with Seth Flaxman on developing this.

New resource: Refresher on Narratives & Violence In December, Over Zero released a refresher guide on its core content surrounding the narrative patterns and underlying psychosocial dynamics that precede and occur throughout identity-based violence. We released this guide in the wake of Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel and the Israeli government’s ongoing assault on Gaza – violence that has collectively killed tens of thousands and displaced millions more. As we’ve supported our partners in better understanding and addressing the dangerous narratives playing out in the United States related to this violence, they have requested written guidance on the core concepts surrounding communications and violence for their work and for personal reflection. Our hope is that this guide is a very small contribution in supporting partners who are leading their communities in finding a different way forward, toward rejecting identity-based violence and acknowledging, valuing, and celebrating our shared humanity. We share it with humility and compassion, noting that the violence abroad and here at home affects many of our partners and their communities directly. Words make worlds. Amid the deep grief, fear, division, and anger that characterize this moment, our words matter more than ever. It is easy to feel that in moments of intense emotion and high stakes–such as this one–exceptions or justifications can be made. It is in fact just the opposite. In these moments, our words can most directly lead to further violence. These moments mandate that we take the strongest care to use our words responsibly, and to proactively address communication that paves the way for violence. https://lnkd.in/dBkNuPux
