This summer, OWL collaborated with Ysabella McAuliffe, and the Interplanetary Initiative Lab (IPL) to deploy a Pico weather balloon for long-duration connectivity tests. Ysabella, an Aerospace Engineering student at Arizona State University and a laboratory aide at IPL, proposed this project, showcasing her passion for building technology for space 🛰 . In her blog post, she shares her journey from learning about HAM radio and radio propagation to successfully managing her first project and leading a team of students. The collaboration between OWL and ASU highlights the potential for future partnerships in advancing technology and education. 🚀 SpaceDucks IV: Advancing Off-Grid Connectivity! In spring 2024, OWL Integrations teamed up with the ClusterDuck Protocol (CDP) community and the brilliant team at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo to pull off SpaceDucks IV — our fourth year pushing the limits of low-orbit LoRa radio communications using weather balloons. 🛰️🎈 OWL is on a mission to build a resilient future. This year, we took a few steps closer to orbital space networking. In six test launches over two days we: 1. Integrated software-defined radios (SDR) improving the flexibility of high altitude communications 2. Developed a plugin for the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) - AQUACK, as we like to call it 😎 - for real-time, off-grid communication 3. Pico Balloon Launch SUCCESS! 🚀 A tiny but mighty pico balloon took flight near Fountain Hills last Friday! This joint effort between the ASU Interplanetary Lab and OWL Integrations is collecting valuable data as it soars through the atmosphere.
