🚨 Fiji Declares Dengue Outbreak – Here’s What You Need to Know 🚨 Fiji’s Ministry of Health has declared a dengue outbreak, with over 200 cases recorded since the start of the year. The majority of cases are in the Western Division, affecting those aged 10-29 years. Our very own Dr. Amanda Murphy, PacMOSSI’s Country Liaison and Coordination Lead, joined Pacific Beat to discuss why outbreaks like this occur and what steps can be taken to mitigate the impact. 🎙 "Outbreaks are declared fairly regularly in Fiji because the virus circulates year-round. When the right conditions—mosquito numbers, weather, and susceptible people—align, we see outbreaks." As mosquito-borne diseases continue to rise across the Pacific, strengthening surveillance and prevention efforts is more crucial than ever. How can we work together to reduce the burden of dengue? Let’s start the conversation. 📺 Listen to the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/exPGQ927

From 2 to 6 December 2024, the #Kiribati Ministry of Health and Medical Services, with support from Rod Bellwood (Queensland Health) and Dr. Amanda Murphy (James Cook University) through #PacMOSSI, organised a key training program in Tarawa focused on outbreak preparedness and response. Eight staff members participated in both theoretical and practical sessions, including: ✅ Surveillance, mosquito trapping, and identification. ✅ Mosquito control strategies for routine and outbreak situations. ✅ Residual spray training, covering implementation, storage, and waste management. One local staff member guided parts of the training, applying knowledge from PacMOSSI’s online course and a practical workshop held in Fiji just prior to this visit. This initiative, supported by the Australian Government (via Partnerships for a Healthy Region), the French Government, and the European Union, highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in strengthening mosquito surveillance and response across the Pacific. #PacMOSSI #HealthyRegion

Today marks the conclusion of the 2024 PacMOSSI hands-on training in Suva, Fiji! 🌟 Over the past week, selected participants from Pacific Island Countries have developed critical skills in monitoring Aedes mosquito insecticide resistance and mapping the data. These new capabilities will empower them to strengthen vector surveillance and control efforts in their home countries. A huge congratulations to all participants, and a heartfelt thank you to our expert faculty for making this training a success! This valuable training, delivered in collaboration with the Fiji Ministry of Health, James Cook University, Pacific Community-SPC, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and Beyond Essential Systems, has equipped professionals with the tools needed to build stronger vector control systems across the region. PacMOSSI is supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through Partnerships for a #HealthyRegion, the #FrenchGovernment, the #NewZealandGovernment and the #EuropeanUnion. #PacMOSSI #jamescookuniversity #PacificHealth #QIMRBerghofer #FijiMOH #beyondessential #HealthyRegion

🌟 The 2024 PacMOSSI training is underway in Suva, Fiji! Public health professionals from across the Pacific have come together for a week-long, hands-on training to enhance their skills in monitoring insecticide resistance in Aedes mosquitoes, which carry dengue, Zika and chikungunya. Insecticide resistance in Aedes mosquitoes remains a critical challenge for effective control of these diseases. With limited recent data on resistance across many Pacific nations, this training aims to equip participants with the tools and expertise to generate valuable resistance data upon return to their respective countries – and to use it to tailor their mosquito control strategies. We’re proud to highlight the work of Vineshwaran Rama from Fiji's Ministry of Health and Medical Services, one of our trainers, who is sharing his expertise with neighboring countries—a true testament to the power of regional collaboration. 🙌 This initiative is a collaboration between the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services, James Cook University, Pacific Community-SPC, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and Beyond Essential Systems, working together to strengthen regional capacity against mosquito-borne diseases. PacMOSSI is supported by the Australian Government through Partnerships for a #HealthyRegion, the French Government, the New Zealand Government and the European Union. We look forward to seeing the positive outcomes of this impactful training as we continue to tackle mosquito-borne diseases across the Pacific! 🌍🦟 Read more👇 https://lnkd.in/gqd_xsyM #PacMOSSI #jamescookuniversity #PacificHealth #QIMRBerghofer #FijiMOH #beyondessential #HealthyRegion

At the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (#CHOGM), climate change was identified as a pressing concern 🌍. In the Pacific, climate change impacts mosquito populations 🦟, raising the risk of diseases like dengue and malaria. Mosquito surveillance is essential to protect public health 🏥 and strengthen community resilience 💪 against these challenges. As small island states advocate for increased climate finance and action 💼, we are committed to fostering partnerships between Pacific Island Countries (PICs) 🌊 and key collaborators to strengthen vector control. Coordinated by James Cook University, PacMOSSI works with Pacific Community-SPC, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Beyond Essential Systems, and other international partners, with vital support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Partnerships for a Healthy Region (#PHR) initiative. Together, we address the interconnected challenges of public health and climate change, building a healthier, more resilient future for all 🌱🌏. #PacMOSSI #HealthyRegion #PacificHealth #ClimateChange

🦟📱As the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (#CHOGM) continues in Samoa, we are supporting mosquito surveillance with the help of #Tupaia, a digital platform developed by Beyond Essential Systems. Through #Tupaia, Pacific Island countries can now collect and report vector surveillance data in real-time, covering everything from adult mosquito monitoring to insecticide resistance testing. In the lead-up to CHOGM, Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) has been conducted at key locations with data captured through #Tupaia. We’re proud to partner Pacific Island countries with tech leaders like Beyond Essential Systems to drive these advancements forward, made possible with the support of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Partnerships for a Healthy Region (#PHR) initiative. #PacMOSSI #PacificHealth #BES #BeyondEssentialSystems #Tupaia
