PadSplit is gaining ground across the country and is proud to be recognized by The New York Times as “the old new way to provide cheap housing.” “There’s no one answer to America’s housing crisis, but I’d like to see local governments experiment by rewarding landlords for creating basement flats, taking in boarders or creating rooming houses. A major impediment is local zoning regulations, which sometimes limit how many unrelated people can live together in a house," says Nick Kristof, two-time winning Pulitzer Prize reporter who has traveled the world searching for solutions to the world's most pressing issues. https://lnkd.in/gsiHzZkk

I was in NYC yesterday when they passed the “City of Yes” package of ordinances to approved shared housing across the city and make other much needed changes to create more affordable housing. So it’s brutal to come home and see that Atlanta’s Zoning 2.0 proposal is to literally move things in the complete opposite direction. The proposal reduces the number of unrelated persons allowed to live in a home to 3, regardless of the size of the home, or any connection to international building, maintenance or occupancy codes. Please fix this, Andre Dickens. Joshua Humphries Don’t the workers who serve our city actually deserve the opportunity to live there?
I'm a glutton for punishment. I'm reviewing the latest modules of the new #ZoningOrdinanceRewrite for City of Atlanta. Some really horrible changes to the definition of a family. This is a big, big deal. Another one that really bothers me is the rollback of great policy Tim Keane helped 'quick fix' in his time here. Tim helped push a parking exemption for all buildings built before 1965. It's a super powerful policy to reduce teardowns and put existing, non-conforming buildings back into productive use. That's been scrubbed from the new version. They kept the exemption for loading spaces, so the decision to not include it for parking is obviously deliberate. This is just one small example that is indicative of the priorities leadership is bringing to this effort. It's quickly becoming a question of just trying to kill the whole rewrite instead of trying to get this one back on track. Super disappointing.

Over 301,000 lower-income households in Jacksonville are spending more than 46% of their income on rent and utilities. To provide adequate affordable housing, the city will need $1.3 billion in funding to meet demand. Addressing affordable housing in Jacksonville requires a unified effort between privatized affordable housing companies like PadSplit, nonprofit housing organizations, and publicly funded initiatives. History has proven that these strategic private-public partnerships have paved the way for some of Jacksonville’s greatest achievements. We now have a once in a generation opportunity as a city to have a lasting, positive impact on affordable housing. Innovative solutions like updating zoning laws or implementing a lodging license process to create opportunities for collaboration to solve the housing crisis. PadSplit is leading the way in providing a scalable solution, but we can achieve even more when public and private sectors unite with local community organizations. The time is now time to work together for sustainable, equitable housing solutions in Jacksonville. Coming back from a whirlwind trip from ATL to LAX to NYC to ATL in under 72 hours. Excited about contacts for potential expansion into new cities and finally getting our advisors Andrew Yang and former deputy HUD secretary Pamela Patenaude together in person. Need to work on our PadSplit “2 keys” gang signs though. Big thanks to The Community Preservation Corporation for the opportunity to share our mission with housers from around the country! #oneroomatatime
