PLA is committed to the health and safety of our employees. Some PLA employees are required to work in cold conditions, while others are affected by the cold that comes with winter weather. Cold stress is a real threat that can lead to serious health problems. Preventing Cold Stress: • Wear appropriate clothing. Several layers of loose clothing are best. (Tight clothing reduces blood circulation.) In extreme conditions, a cold suit may be necessary. • Protect ears, face, hands, and feet. (Wear insulated gloves, earmuffs, thick socks, etc.) • Boots or shoes should be waterproof and insulated. • Wear a hat. (Hats reduce the amount of body heat that escapes from the head.) • Move into warmer locations during breaks. • Drink plenty of warm liquids. • Avoid touching cold metal surfaces with bare skin. • Monitor your physical condition and that of your coworkers. If you suspect an employee is suffering from cold stress or if you notice an employee experiencing some of the following symptoms, do not leave the employee unattended. Take action in the appropriate manner based on the responses listed below. Hypothermia: Occurs when body temperature drops faster than heat can be produced. A body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the person unable to think clearly or move well. This creates a very dangerous situation because the person may not know what is happening or know what to do about it. Early Symptoms -Shivering -Fatigue -Loss of coordination -Confusion and disorientation Late Symptoms -No shivering -Blue skin -Dilated pupils -Slowed pulse and breathing -Loss of consciousness Response -Alert the supervisor and request medical assistance. -Move the person into a warm room or shelter. -Remove any wet clothing. -Warm the center of their body first-chest, neck, head, and core-using an electric blanket, if available; or use skin-to-skin contact under loose, dry layers of blankets, clothing, towels, or sheets. -Warm beverages may help increase body temperature. Do not try to give beverages to an unconscious person. -After their body temperature has increased, keep the person dry and wrapped in a warm blanket, including the head and neck. -If a person has no pulse, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). #worksafety #coldstress #freezingtemperatures #safetytipoftheweek

The detection and elimination of accident hazards through investigation is one of the most effective methods of improving an organization's safety record. Once the accident sequence is set in motion, little can be done to control the degree of severity. The difference between a scraped scalp and a fractured skull is usually a matter of chance; whether a tire blowout results in a fatality or not is a matter of when and where it blows. For this reason, all accidents and "near misses” should be investigated. 1. Logic of Accident Investigation - Accident investigation is based upon the logic that: • All accidents have causes. Eliminate the causes and prevent the accident. • Accident causes can be determined; and Corrective action, which will eliminate the causes and prevent similar accidents, can be developed, and applied. 2. Areas of Focus - In investigating accidents, the following areas should be focused upon: • How was the injury or damage incurred, exactly what happened, and where? • Under what circumstances did the accident occur, in other words, why? • Once the details have been reconstructed, the focus should be on what can be done to prevent a similar accident from recurring. Prevention of recurrence is always the most important goal of an investigation. Fault finding or placing blame serves no useful purpose and is not a part of an accident investigation. Prevention of future, similar occurrences is accomplished through correcting procedures and conditions, as well as through training. 3. Benefits of Accident Investigation • Discover the causes of production interruptions and indicate the corrective action to be taken. • Prevent accident recurrence. • Eliminate the distress and suffering caused by injury. • Demonstrate management concern for employee safety. • Eliminate economic losses resulting from damaged tools, machines, and materials. • Create an awareness of problem areas. • Discover how methods and procedures can be improved. • Identify areas in the current safety program that can be strengthened. • Identify topics that should be included in training programs. • Identify additional items to be included in future safety surveys, and • Relate accident costs of production. #workersafety #accidentatwork #safetytipofweek

Lumber Pricing is, of course, a significant driver of new pallet pricing, but its relationship to recycled pallet pricing isn’t so straightforward. In fact, changes in Lumber Pricing do not track closely to changes in recycled pallet demand at all, but they do track closely to changes in recycled pallet pricing. Read how Lumber Pricing and 6 other key economic and industry indicators impact the recycled pallet market: https://hubs.ly/Q02WL4r20 #blog #palletpricing #lumber #woodpallet
