  • Last Monday (December 9), leaders from the financial sector gathered in São Paulo (SP), Brazil, for the event Security for Investment - Due Diligence in Human and Environmental Rights in the Cattle Ranching Sector. Organized by the UN Global Compact – Brazil Network, in partnership with the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) and supported by the U.S. Department of State, the meeting fostered discussions on sustainable practices in the livestock production chain, focusing on risk reduction and the safeguarding of human rights. The event featured Rachel Poynter, Principal Deputy Director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons at the U.S. Department of State, who emphasized the importance of an integrated approach to addressing human and environmental rights violations in supply chains. Poynter also reaffirmed the United States' commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at due diligence in strategic sectors such as cattle ranching.  Another highlight was the participation of Luciana Nicola, director at Itaú Unibanco, who emphasized the private sector's role in leading ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices to promote more responsible and sustainable supply chains. The event aimed to develop a guiding document to enhance risk assessment protocols and promote fair working conditions within the livestock production chain, particularly in the state of Pará. The Brazil Network of the UN Global Compact, the second-largest local network in the world, has been leading initiatives since 2003 to align business operations with universal human rights principles.

  • On December 5, the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) was honored to receive Cindy Dyer, the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, and her team, in Brasília (DF) for an informational session marking the launch of a groundbreaking study on the prevalence of forced labor and modern slavery in the cattle ranching sector in the state of Pará. The study, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago in partnership with PADF, is part of the Fair Work Program, implemented by PADF and its partners with the support of the U.S. Department of State through the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. The initiative aims to strengthen institutional mechanisms to reduce the incidence of forced labor in the livestock production chain in Pará. Ambassador Dyer highlighted the importance of collaboration among partners, emphasizing that the program is a pioneer in adopting innovative approaches to measure the prevalence of forced labor and trafficking in persons, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented strategies. She stressed the importance of victim-centered initiatives that provide support services to those impacted by forced labor, and the need for close collaboration with governments and civil society to prevent violations and ensure the legal accountability of perpetrators. Dyer also congratulated PADF for its hard work and dedication in producing such a detailed and comprehensive study, underlining its essential role in offering a holistic understanding of the complexities involved in combating forced labor in Pará. The event brought together representatives from the U.S. Government, PADF, the federal and Pará state governments, civil society, and experts, including Matheus Klein, a representative from Brazil’s Ministry of Labor and Employment, who reinforced the ongoing commitment and importance of joint actions. The occasion reaffirmed the collective commitment of institutions to combat forced labor and modern slavery, fostering sustainable public policies and cross-sectoral initiatives.

  • Did you know that mangroves and seagrass beds are powerful allies in the fight against #ClimateChange? These incredible ecosystems absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide and store it in the soil, playing a key role in protecting our planet’s health. Understanding and quantifying their carbon storage capacity is crucial for developing robust restoration plans, securing sustainable funding, and advocating for policies that protect coastal ecosystems. That’s why PADF and the Fondo Caribeño para la Biodiversidad  brought together climate leaders from across the #Caribbean to master carbon stock estimation techniques. Guided by experts from Climate Focus, participants learned how to measure biomass, collect soil samples, and quantify carbon storage using science-based approaches. Watch the full video to discover more about this enriching experience and its significance for our shared future!
