A couple of weeks ago I was knee deep in wrapping up Pandata's exit. The one webinar I made time for on closing day was Allie K. Miller's "How to use AI to 10x your productivity." If you haven't yet, give it a listen. Here are just a few examples she shares how she infuses and encourages the use of AI across her team: 📽️ Record meetings - generate to do’s and pre populate action items. Many aspects of record keeping are tedious and prone to error anyway. Humans can and should always spot check. 🎙️ Walk and talk to refine ideas - I'm actually writing this post on an NYC sub ride (yay for steps + productivity) 🤯 Massively scale up brainstorming - generate 100 ideas, rule out the worst ones, curate the best examples and iterate, until good enough for humans to take over and polish. My favorite example of this is how she interviews prospective team members for the “AI-first mindset”. Just like we do live pair-programming to get a sense of how a developer might perform in a collaborative setting, she actually does live "copiloting". Candidates screen share and showcase how they use ChatGPT or other tools of their choice to augment their work. Fair warning, Allie is on 1.5x in this one so listen on normal and take notes 👇

Have you recently found yourself or your organization in a position of writing up impossible job descriptions? I recently helped a client put together a posting for an AI Strategist. Obviously the standard template of "5 years of experience in AI _____" just doesn't work. We had to design the required experience to be more based on aptitude and critical thinking. In my latest article with Open Data Science Conference (ODSC), I reflect on how this reminds me a lot of the early days of hiring data scientists. And some of the retention problems early on in the field. As the half life of learned skills get shorter, the approach to talent has to change. And so does our approach to investing in it and retaining it. As one example in the article, I discuss how we lowered our utilization rate at Pandata to make room for ongoing upskilling. What advice would you add when it comes to hiring and retaining skilled AI users?
