Had a great time speaking with The New York Times about rowing machines. Rowing continues to grow thanks to the most efficient and effective fitness machine that exists. https://lnkd.in/ermXtNiB

The power of LinkedIn; a vignette and a love letter to Lisbon. I’ve been to Portugal with Para Rowing Foundation for two years now, flying into Lisbon and immediately catching a transfer inland to Avis, not stopping to enjoy the city where the idea for PRF was committed to and where the non-profit’s logo is derived (the decorative pavement of Rua Augusta to be exact). Desperate to explore this gorgeous place, my wife H and I booked a minibreak for March to coincide with the end of one of the PRF Intensive Trainings but, after cancer caught up with mum in the end, she passed away so we rescheduled the trip. 💔 A few months passed before H’s birthday in November. That seemed like as good an opportunity as any so we rebooked the break. I didn’t know anyone in Lisbon and H is a big history/museum buff so I did a LinkedIn search to see who could help me connect the dots and found the wonderful Joana Sousa Monteiro, Director of the Museum of Lisbon. I sent a short message clearly explaining who I am, why I’m there and asking for her assistance, if she’d be so kind. Immediately welcoming, Joana offered to meet us and show us around the museum’s exhibits when we arrived in the city. All set! 🇬🇧🛫🛬🇵🇹 Lisbon didn’t disappoint and might have topped Florence, our previous fav spot. The museum was incredible too, especially the accurate scale model of the city. We were enthralled by Joana’s informative descriptions of art, religion, geology, the natural disasters they faced, socioeconomic oscillations of populous and government… etc With trinkets of markets locked in our hand luggage and fond memories of Portuguese hospitality locked in our minds, we ventured home knowing we’ll be back to this wonderful place very soon. 🇵🇹🛫🛬🇬🇧 Thanks Joana. Thanks LinkedIn. Be brave! Contact someone and make a new connection.
