🎯 What Makes an IEP Goal S.M.A.R.T?   A good IEP goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Here's an example:   ❌ Not S.M.A.R.T Goal:   "By January 2026 the Learner will improve her writing skills with 80% accuracy over 4 out of 5 trials."  ✅ S.M.A.R.T Goal:   "By January 2026, the Learner will write a complete sentence using correct capitalization and punctuation in 4 out of 5 opportunities, as measured by teacher observation and work samples."   The difference? Clarity, measurability, and a clear timeframe to track progress! ✨4 Do's and Don'ts for Creating IEP Goals✨ ✅ DO: Be Collaborative (Including Parents & Students)   - Incorporate input from parents, teachers, and even the student to create meaningful goals.   ❌ DON’T: Create goals in isolation without considering the whole team’s insights.   ✅ DO: Make Goals S.M.A.R.T. - Specific - Measurable -Achievable - Realistic - Timely - Example: Learner will identify the main idea in a 5-sentence paragraph on anime, using executive functioning supports (i.e., graphic organizer, fidget tool, etc.) with 80% accuracy over 4 out of 5 trials aeb homework and classwork samples. ❌ DON’T: Write vague goals like "Learner will improve reading."   ✅ DO: Base the goals off of Data - Build on what the student does well while addressing areas of growth.   ❌ DON’T: Focus solely on deficits or ignore the student’s interests.   ✅ DO: Ensure Goals Are Individualized  - Set goals that are based on the learners individual needs, that are challenging but not accomplishable. ❌ DON’T: Write overly ambitious goals that set the student up for frustration.   💡 Well-crafted IEP goals pave the way for student success.
