#Women: Iraq’s Planned Marriage Bill Seriously Threatens the Rights of Women and Girls While the bill’s sponsors have since clarified that the minimum marriage age would be set at 15 — three years younger than the current threshold of 18 under the 1959 Personal Status Law — the proposal has drawn objections from women’s rights groups and legal scholars as well as international organizations. https://lnkd.in/gQbkzpnt

More than 60 percent of homicides of women are carried out by their intimate partners or by other relatives. The #FemicideIndex just released by UN Women found that at least 51,000 women were killed globally in 2023, and 6 out of 10 women who were victims of homicide were killed by their spouse or another family member. Monday marked the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It is tragically appropriate to take stock of two decades of war and genocide in Sudan and to commit to ending the violence against civilians, including the raping of women and girls.

Challenges with peacekeeping have prompted soul-searching within the UN on how best to adapt peacekeeping to the reality of a fracturing world. On Nov. 1, the organization published a new independent study on the subject, titled “The Future of Peacekeeping, New Models, and Related Capabilities.” The result was over 30 bespoke models for the future of pko at the UN. https://lnkd.in/gfyreCZ3
