With over 30,000 cooperatives nationwide, opportunities for shared ownership has increased. These co-ops foster economic equity and empower local and global communities. To support this path to community wealth, PathLight Law offers a variety of legal services for co-ops. We've led the formation of worker co-ops like Nick’s Pizza in Oakland, CA and helped restructure Bread & Roses Digital from founder-owned to a worker-owned co-op. We've also provided compliance advice to support a capital raise for Food Shed Co-op and conducted a fast and efficient bylaws review for Cooperation Racine, a new Black-led artist’s cooperative in Chicago. Interested in Diversified Community Investment Funds (DCIFs)? Check out National Coalition for Community Capital (NC3)'s Coalition Conversation! During the conversation, PathLight Law Managing Partner Brian Beckon joined NC3's Christopher Miller and Local Return's Jessica David to discuss the structure of DCIFs.
Welcome to NC3's Coalition Conversation! These short videos will be posted once a month, sometimes live and sometimes pre-recorded, meant to inform those learning about community capital, to engage those who are already familiar, and to introduce new nuances to those who are partners and community capital professionals. This Coalition Conversation includes an overview of the What? and Why? of the Diversified Community Investment Fund (DCIF) structure by NC3 Board Chair, Christopher Miller, and NC3 Board Member, Brian Beckon. NC3 worked with Jessica David and Local Return in Rhode Island to launch the first DCIF in the nation and the latter portion of this conversation includes that story.
