Why are they called 𝑃𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠? Did you know the term "Pothole" dates back to 15th and 16th century England? Pottery makers at the time would take advantage of the deep ruts left by wagon and coach wheels, digging into them to reach clay deposits underneath for their pottery work. Teamsters (a person who drove a team, usually of oxen, horses, or mules) driving the wagons and coaches noticed the damage and blamed the potters for creating the holes in the roads, coining the term “pothole.” Swipe through our carousel to view the fascinating story behind the origin of the word "Pothole." ➡️ #PavementManagement #RoadMaintenance #CivilEngineering #PublicWorks

With National Pothole Day coming up, let's take a look at how Potholes form! 1️⃣ Precipitation: It all starts with rain, snow, or ice accumulating on the road surface. Water seeps into cracks and imperfections, weakening the pavement. 2️⃣ Freezing: When temperatures drop, the trapped water freezes, expanding and putting pressure on the pavement. This freeze-thaw cycle repeats, further deteriorating the road. 3️⃣ Thawing: As temperatures rise, the ice melts, leaving gaps and voids beneath the surface. The pavement becomes unstable, unable to support the weight of passing vehicles. 4️⃣ Collapse: Finally, the weakened pavement gives way under the pressure, forming a pothole. With each passing car, the hole expands, creating a hazard for drivers and cyclists alike. Implementing data-driven maintenance plans and proactive repairs can stop this cycle before potholes form. At PMG, we help municipalities identify risk areas early with tools like RoadINsights for smarter infrastructure planning. Let’s keep our roads safer—prevention starts with data! 📊 . . . #Potholes #RoadMaintenance #Infrastructure #PavementPreservation

"Which maintenance approach is best for our roads?" The best type of road maintenance depends on several factors, some of these including: 1️⃣ Road Condition: Is it a minor crack, a pothole, or widespread deterioration? 2️⃣ Traffic Volume: High-traffic roads typically require more robust solutions than low-traffic areas. 3️⃣ Budget: Preventative maintenance is often more cost-effective in the long run, but upfront costs need consideration. Overall, there is no "one size fits all" approach... At Pavement Management Group, we leverage advanced road data collection aligned with ASTM standards and powered by Team PMG's expertise to deliver data-driven pavement strategies and address your specific needs. We have the experience and expertise to deliver the best solutions for your roads 🛣 . . . #PavementManagement #PavementMaintenance #PreventiveMaintenance #PublicWorks #CivilEngineer

Did You Know? #Microsurfacing is a cost-effective asphalt treatment that extends pavement life by enhancing skid resistance, reducing moisture intrusion, preventing oxidation and raveling, and restoring a uniform black surface. It’s ideal for leveling, with fast application and minimal traffic disruption. Three Benefits of a Micro Surface: 1️⃣ Reduces life-cycle costs by 25 - 45% compared to traditional resurfacing methods 2️⃣ Reduces greenhouse gases by 44% or more, and energy use by 54% or more compared to traditional resurfacing methods 3️⃣ Allows for a return to traffic in 1 hour . . . #Microsurface #PavementMaintenance #PavementManagement #AsphaltMaintenance

How a Pavement Management Program Breaks the "Worst-to-First" Cycle Maintaining roadways can feel like an uphill battle, especially when budgets are tight and public pressure focuses on the worst roads first. But there’s a smarter way forward. In the latest edition of Talk of the Towns, Howard Mills outlines the key elements of an effective Pavement Management Program (PMP). From accurate roadway inventories and PCI assessments to transparent communication with stakeholders, these strategies are designed to maximize budgets, improve long-term roadway conditions, and build trust within communities. Howard Mills served as Wallkill Town Councilman, Town Supervisor, NYS Assemblyman and NYS Superintendent of Insurance. He is now a Partner of Pavement Management Group with a passion for pavement management! Read more below ⬇️ . . . #PavementManagement #TeamPMG #Infrastructure

Pavement Management Group reposted this
Yesterday, we wrapped up our final Lunch & Learn of the year in the Kenton and Boone County area of Kentucky! It’s been an incredible year empowering municipal governments with the knowledge and tools they need to make data-driven decisions in pavement management and preservation. When these two strategies work hand in hand, communities experience roadways that last longer, perform better, and ultimately keep drivers safer. We’re proud to partner with local leaders to maximize taxpayer dollars and build a brighter future—one road at a time. Here’s to continuing the journey in the new year! Special shout outs to: Michael Metzger , Nicole Metzger , Parisanne Noble-Navarro , Pierre Peltier and David Helm for their amazing efforts and presentations, and for paving the way alongside of me in the pavement management and preservation industry 🙌🏻 Pavement Management Group Strawser Construction Inc.
