Our latest healthcare report delves into key trends shaping the industry and raises important considerations for policymakers, regulators, and patients. Historically, healthcare has been an attractive space for private equity investment due to its steady demand, aging population, and fragmented subsectors ripe for consolidation. Despite the headwinds of increasing regulatory scrutiny and high interest rates, private equity firms continued a steady pace of investment in the US healthcare space in 2024.

In the Financial Post yesterday: Canada’s public pension funds need to step up on climate as political momentum wavers. Shift's third annual Canadian Pension Climate Report Card assesses the climate commitments of 11 of Canada’s largest pension managers and finds most are making some progress but it’s concerned about the pace as well as the backsliding by some. Canada’s big pensions need to recognize the power and influence they wield and to more actively use it as U.S. President Donald Trump unravels momentum on climate action and a Canadian carbon tax policy looks to be on the way out. Shift’s executive director Adam Scott says political backsliding only increases the urgent need for financial leadership to fill the void. Scott says pensions need to think long term as their funds require a stable climate to fulfil their mandates. “The climate crisis is subject to the laws of physics and not to four-year election cycles.”

With a new federal tax proposal released last week, we joined with Americans For Tax Fairness and Americans for Financial Reform to show how our tax code makes the private equity industry more profitable and wealthy PE executives even richer. AFT President Randi Weingarten had this to say about our new report: “This report lays bare the devastating impact of private equity’s unchecked greed, from fueling mass evictions and bankrupting businesses to exploiting tax loopholes and gutting essential services like healthcare. Private equity billionaires have rigged the system to extract wealth at the expense of workers, tenants, and communities, all while dodging their fair share of taxes. It’s time for policymakers to rein in this predatory industry and put people over profits.”
