About us
PennDOT oversees programs and policies affecting highways, urban and rural public transportation, airports, railroads, ports, and waterways. More than three-quarters of PennDOT's annual budget is invested in Pennsylvania's approximately 122,000 miles of state and local highways and 32,000 state and local bridges. PennDOT is directly responsible for nearly 40,000 miles of highway and roughly 25,400 bridges, a system first established in 1911. Roughly 7,095 of PennDOT's complement of nearly 11,706 employees are engaged in the maintenance, restoration, and expansion of the state highway system. They work in central headquarters in Harrisburg and 11 engineering districts, with facilities in all 67 counties. PennDOT also administers the state's 11.8 million vehicle registrations and 10.2 million driver's licenses and IDs, and oversees safety and emission inspection programs.

Today, our northeast PA team highlighted improvements and upgrades in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming counties to wrap up the 2024 construction season. PennDOT and our industry partners paved 140 roadway miles and rehabbed, repaired, or replaced 150 bridges in the region. Additionally, PennDOT’s local maintenance forces preserved 540 miles of roadway surface with seal coat and painted 10,300 line miles. Today, our Pittsburgh-based team highlighted the accomplishments of the 2024 construction season, which included $441 million in infrastructure investments in Allegheny, Beaver, and Lawrence counties. 2024 regional accomplishments also include: • 53 projects put out to bid. • Approximately 741 miles of paving and roadway maintenance. • 39 bridges repaired or replaced, including nine in poor condition. • 39 slides repaired. With holiday travel just around the corner, we joined with Pennsylvania State Police and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to remind drivers to wear their seat belts, drive sober, and eliminate distractions behind the wheel while celebrating the season’s festivities. Our annual Operation Safe Holiday kicked off November 11 with the “Click It or Ticket” Thanksgiving Enforcement Mobilization and will continue with sobriety checkpoints, roving patrols, and regular traffic safety patrols through New Year’s Day.
