Today, we want to honor the life and legacy of Charles H. “Skip” Smith, Penn State alumnus and philanthropist, whose vision and generosity transformed The Arboretum at Penn State into the cherished destination it is today. Before his passing, Skip made a lasting impact with the contribution to create the Charles H. “Skip” Smith Soaring Waters Fountain Garden. This new feature will celebrate his beloved late wife, Margery, and serve as a welcoming gateway for visitors to our campus. Skip’s contributions to the Arboretum began with his landmark gift in 2007, which established the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens. Since then, his philanthropy has inspired countless others, enabling the Arboretum to flourish as a hub for reflection, education, and community. We extend our deepest condolences and gratitude to the Smith family for their enduring commitment to our mission. “Like the plants and pollinators that have found a home there, The Arboretum at Penn State is a living thing, and I am glad that my support has helped it to grow and develop,” said Smith before his passing. Skip’s legacy will continue to bloom in every corner of the Arboretum for generations to come. Charles H. “Skip” Smith, second from right, with his sons Dave, Jeffry and John. Credit: Penn State. Before he passed away on Dec. 23, 2024, Charles H. “Skip” Smith, the Penn State alumnus who launched the construction of The Arboretum At Penn State, made another gift to build upon his family’s legacy at the University. He made a $1 million commitment to create the Charles H. "Skip" Smith Soaring Waters Fountain Garden. It will complement the Margery Enes Smith Soaring Waters feature, which he previously named in memory of his late wife. https://ow.ly/rRpJ50UI5WE

#WeAre so happy to announce our social media intern, Sadie Wilhelm! ✨ Sadie is a junior at Penn State University studying Advertising with a minor in Digital Media Trends and Analytics, while also working toward her Smeal Business Certificate (because, you know, sleep is overrated anyway). As a first-generation college student, she is proud to be a member of Tri Alpha, the national honor society for first-gen students. Additionally, Sadie is actively involved in Cru, an on-campus Christian organization where she has found an AMAZING community. When she’s not studying, you can probably find Sadie doodling on her iPad, spending time with friends, adventuring, or running on Dunkin’— no SERIOUSLY, caffeine is both her fuel and love language. ☕ Of course, we had to ask what her lifelong theme song would be, and she chose There She Goes by The La’s. 🎶 Sadie is excited to bring her creativity, sense of humor, and go-getter attitude to the team! Please join us in welcoming Sadie to Penn State Outreach! 🎉

Twenty-seven educators from central and northern Pennsylvania are taking part in the 2024-25 WPSU Education Ambassador program, aimed at boosting their skills as champions of media literacy. Participants kicked off the program in October with an engaging full day of training at WPSU, followed by a series of virtual sessions and resource sharing that continued throughout the school year. Featured speakers included Matt Jordan, head of Penn State’s Film Production and Media Studies Department, on the five components of media literacy, and WPSU News Director Emily Reddy on crafting radio news stories. Educators are applying the training, with Kate Hoffman designing a media literacy course, Morgan Fogel incorporating resources into her middle school curriculum, and Ashley Kline sharing insights and networking with colleagues.
