  • Here's another author spotlight from the Journal of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association. Jocelyn Novella shared this with us: "My clinical background is in college counseling, and my co-author and I wanted to understand some of the risk factors reported in the Healthy Minds Study. The HMS is a large national survey conducted with college students that reports on many factors related to mental wellness. These large numbers allowed for us to look at those students who had indicated various levels of suicidal risk and evaluate what wellness-related factors impacted them." • Our next Jornal of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association (JPCA) spotlight features Dr. Brittany Sager-Heinrichs who shared that "A key insight from my article research was recognizing how the addiction experience itself is traumatic. Almost every study participant reported a traumatic event occurring during active addiction. It was profound to reflect on how many sources identify hitting "rock bottom" or reaching "desperation" as traumatic for those with substance use disorders. We would likely not frame events that way if the trauma happened outside the context of addiction. This highlights the need for trauma-integrated addiction treatment that avoids stigmatizing language. By acknowledging the inherent traumatic nature of addiction itself, we can better support long-term recovery."
