This morning I will make my second presentation for Shaw Industries. The company has become a "second-chance employer", i.e. willing to hire individuals with a background. The first presentation was several months ago. It was for HR Personnel. My charge was to help them better understand how to support Second Chance employees, with an emphasis on those who may have had substance use challenges. They were moved enough by that presentation for corporate to allow them to bring me back a second time to speak directly to their employee base. The title of my presentation today will be: "The Power Within Connection". The premises is that "connection" is one of the greatest reasons for our existence, as well as the greatest part of the Human Experience. However, the opposite is also true; the loss or absence of connection is one of the greatest drivers of destruction within the individual, the family, and, ultimately, the community. 20 years of prison has given me first hand experience and an up close view of the destructive power of isolation. My goal is to encourage each and every employee to strive to both make and allow connection because there is restorative power within it! As I was making final preparations this morning, one recurring thought was this: "Restoration is a process that must happen from the inside out. It requires work on behalf of the individual .
