About us
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) entities have more than 9 million members and supporters globally, and PETA U.S. is the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. PETA Foundation was founded in 1993 as an organization that helps PETA run, and includes departments like IT, Development, and Interactive Media. PETA and the PETA Foundation are two separate organizations but work very closely together. Looking for a career in animal rights? PETA is contacting major U.S. meat companies following the news that one of Italy’s oldest meat producers, Gruppo Tonazzo, will stop selling animal flesh in favor of focusing on its line of meat-free products. We’re asking five of the oldest U.S. meat companies to follow suit by dropping animal flesh and focusing on their vegan lines instead—a revolutionary move that would put them years ahead of the competition. PETA warns that meat companies that refuse to change will be left behind, just like tobacco farmers of the past who fought to stay in business instead of envisioning what was ahead and switching crops. The five U.S. meat companies that PETA wrote to already have their own vegan lines or partnerships with vegan brands, so it would be simple to focus on them. They include Hormel Foods (The Better Meat Co.), Cargill (Crave House), Smithfield Foods (Pure Farmland), Tyson Foods (Raised & Rooted), and Oscar Mayer (NotCo). https://lnkd.in/gsUydbef #vegan #veganism #animalsafety #animalwelfare #movingon #veganlifestyle #veganmeals #meatalternatives #animalrights #HormelFoods #Cargill #SmithfieldFoods #TysonFoods #OscarMayer

A whistleblower recently contacted PETA regarding BPD, Inc. (formerly “Barney’s Pets Inc.”), a massive dealer and breeder of small animals that reportedly supplies big-box pet stores like PetSmart and Petco. We were told that BPD, Inc. drivers transport live animals to be sold as pets—including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, reptiles, and other small animals—across multiple states on multiple-day trips and leave them in unattended vehicles for extended periods, including overnight. PETA urgently alerted the company to this recent report and asked that it take immediate action to ensure that all animals are provided with safe, lawful, and humane handling, care, and transportation. We urged BPD to increase the oversight of drivers and deploy them in pairs, which would allow them to drive straight through to their destination and decrease the amount of time animals are languishing in vehicles. However, the CEO of BPD, Inc. has not responded. Please join us in asking him to act now. https://lnkd.in/grtjP4Sr #PetSmart #Petco #AnimalRights #AnimalWelfare #TakeAction #PetStores #PetIndustry #Activism #Advocate #Animals #PETA

Dogs whose owners can’t be bothered to bring them in the house routinely freeze to death inside makeshift shelters that aren’t adequate against frigid temperatures. Others perish when their chains tangle or freeze to the ground, preventing them from reaching what little shelter they may have. Some succumb to dehydration or starvation as their water and food freeze solid — if they have these things at all. The best way to prevent dogs from suffering and dying on chains is to enact and enforce laws that prevent chaining. You can find out if your city has an anti-tethering law by contacting animal control or checking your local ordinances online. If it doesn’t, it’s time to get to work. Start by calling and emailing local and state representatives and encouraging them to ban chaining. Create flyers and ask local businesses to display them. Garner support through petitions, social media and letters to newspapers, and speak at public meetings to make your case: A strong anti-chaining ordinance not only protects dogs but also improves public safety. Studies show that chained dogs are almost three times more likely to attack than dogs who are humanely confined. Keep pushing until elected officials listen. In the meantime, stay vigilant. If you see a dog left outside in the cold and the owner won’t bring them indoors, contact animal control. If they’re unresponsive or closed, call the police and explain that the dog needs immediate protection as required by law. https://lnkd.in/eMyazKHv #dogs #cruelty #cold #freeze #BanChaining #suffering #advocate #activist #NeverBeSilent #NoExcuse4AnimalAbuse #SaveAnimals #AnimalJustice #AnimalRights

Huge win! Envigo was sentenced and ordered to pay more than $35 million in penalties, including a $22 million fine. This sentence follows the company’s June 3 guilty pleas to a criminal charge of conspiracy to violate the federal Animal Welfare Act and a felony charge of conspiracy to violate the federal Clean Water Act. PETA’s investigator tipped off the government to many of the violations cited in the Justice Department’s filings, including that Envigo staff killed conscious puppies via excruciating injections into the heart, advised other employees to withhold food from nursing mother dogs and falsely told inspectors the dogs were being fed every day, and falsified records. These are the first-ever federal convictions of a supplier of animals for experimentation, making Envigo’s sentence a historic win for animals. Please urge your members of Congress to mandate that NIH stop throwing away our tax dollars on cruel and useless experiments on animals like these beagles and instead focus on modern, non-animal research methods. https://lnkd.in/gyQk9MYH #PETA #Envigo #NIH #AnimalTesting #Research #TakeAction #activist #advocate #cruelty #NotOurstoUse #AnimalRights #AnimalWelfare #AnimalLiberation

As the current bird flu outbreak worsens, concerns about transmission to humans are rising. At the time of this writing, 13 farms have reported positive tests in six U.S. states—a low estimate, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t require or even recommend that most farms test for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A (H5N1). A wave of new detoxes and cleanses is washing over society as more people than ever are giving their bodies a break from alcohol and other habits in the new year. The proof is in the vegan pudding: the booze-free beverage industry is booming, and trends like “Dry January” and “Caffeine Detoxes” are more popular than ever. While people are giving booze and caffeine the boot, their fridge contains perhaps one of the most toxic and addictive substances ever—dairy. Is it time for a dairy detox? https://lnkd.in/eYrFUmrp #detox #dairy #cleanse #vegan #DairyDetox #toxic #addictive #GoVegan #LiveVegan #DitchDairy #AnimalRights #Reasons2GoVegan #VeganTips #FreedomForAll

Is humanity capable of separating itself from speciesism? Could a dyed-in-the-wool meat-lover be persuaded to resist their favorite cut of meat or never again buy leather shoes? You can learn the answers to these and other important animal rights questions from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. She recently sat down for an interview with BBC World Service’s HARDtalk, in which she revealed whether she thinks humans will ever go “animal-free.” https://lnkd.in/g-69QYHt #podcast #listen #nextpodcast #nextlisten #educationalpodcast #animalrights #Activism #Advocacy #AnimalActivism #AnimalAdvocacy #AnimalWelfare #AnimalRights #AnimalAbuse

December 2024 marks a heartbreaking milestone for Corky, the longest-held captive orca in the world: 55 years of confinement to tiny marine park tanks. That’s why, on December 6 and 7, PETA led the “Run for Corky’s Freedom”—a roughly 150-mile relay run from Los Angeles to San Diego—to demand that SeaWorld release her into a seaside sanctuary. https://lnkd.in/evjfHwbH #run #Corky #orca #MarineParks #cruelty #BoycottSeaWorld #SeaWorldSucks #captivity #NotOurs2Use #advocate #activist #CaptivityKills
