Hey Business Owners! Do you drive your vehicle for your business? 🚗 If so, then you may want to keep good records of your business mileage. The IRS has increased the standard mileage rate for business use to 67 cents per mile in 2024, up from 65.5 cents per mile in 2023. If you were not aware, you can deduct either your business mileage or the actual vehicle expenses incurred during the year. However, you must take mileage on a business vehicle the first year you place it into service if you want to take mileage in any future year. It’s important to keep a compliant IRS mileage log to support your business miles. There are a number of apps you can use, such as Mile IQ, Driversnote, Everlance, or even QuickBooks. This is going to be the best way to track your mileage, but if you’re old school and don’t trust technology, then you will want to make sure you document specific information on your paper records. The IRS wants to see the number of miles driven for each trip, the date that each trip occurs, the destination of each trip, and the business purpose for each trip. And it’s important to keep up with these records timely and consistently throughout the year. So just looking at your odometer at the beginning and end of the year and using the difference as your business mileage for the year won’t cut it! And this is a lot of information to write down, so maybe just log it into an app, yeah? Give me a call or shoot me an email to chat about this some more! Get ready everyone! The IRS has announced that they will be accepting and processing 2023 tax returns starting on January 29th, 2024. They also promised an improvement in their tools and resources this year. Such improvements include allocating more help to their toll-free line and customer call-back feature to reduce wait times on hold, as well as improvements to the "Where's My Refund" tool on their website, which will provide more details on taxpayer refunds. We'll see how much they actually improve this year, but this is certainly a step in the right direction.
