Coral forests are so integral to marine health. This is a great discovery for ocean conservationists everywhere!
NEW DISCOVERY: The National Geographic Society Pristine Seas team discovered the largest coral in the world in the Solomon Islands. Measuring 112 by 105 feet, this mega coral (Pavona clavus) is longer than a blue whale—it's even visible from space. A new and worrying update from the IUCN Red List - reporting that 44% of coral species are now at risk for extinction - has us feeling compelled to remind you why coral reefs matter. Healthy reefs = healthy oceans, and healthy oceans support healthy communities. The well being of humans and nature is inextricably tied. We can't forget about the connectedness of our ecosystems as they face the ongoing threat of climate change. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/en5c-b6S Watch the video to learn more ⬇

“With 2024 on track to be the hottest year on record, we urgently need to protect fungi so they can help us preserve a liveable planet.”
World leaders gather at COP29 this week to tackle runaway climate change. We think the climate conversation needs to dive underground and recognize the critical role mycorrhizal fungi play in controlling CO2. 🍄🟫🌡️ Mycorrhizal fungi draw down roughly 13 billion tons of CO2 into the soil. But threats from agriculture and urbanization to the climate crisis threaten fungi’s survival and ability to regulate global carbon levels. 🥵 With 2024 on track to be the hottest year on record, we urgently need to protect fungi so they can help us preserve a liveable planet! I’m excited to be in Cape Town this week for The Earthshot Prize. I’m particularly energized to see two of our partners join forces in supporting the next generation of leaders addressing climate change! #slingshotprize #EarthshotCapetown
As Earthshot Week kicks off in Cape Town today, we have announced a series of programmes designed to inspire and engage the next generation of climate innovators: the Global Climate Accelerator Network launched in partnership with Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation, the Climate Youth Leadership Programme, and Project Slingshot, which will launch in partnership with National Geographic. These new programmes will, for the first time, ensure that The Earthshot Prize reaches children and young people from the age of five well into adulthood and inspire the next generation to join the movement fixing the planet, one breakthrough solution at a time.
