We were honored to welcome Senator Mark Kelly and Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon to Hanwha Philly Shipyard! During the visit, they toured our facilities, including the State of Maine National Security Multi-Mission Vessel, and met with many of our employees and apprentices along the way. Senator Kelly even shared a moment with a few of our Kings Point alumni! Senator Kelly highlighted the importance of strengthening the U.S. maritime industry through the bipartisan SHIPS for America Act, which aims to rebuild the U.S. shipyard base, and expand efforts to recruit, train, and retain skilled mariners and shipyard workers. We're proud to be part of the future of American shipbuilding and grateful for the support of leaders like Senator Kelly and Congresswoman Scanlon. Thank you for visiting and for your ongoing support for the maritime industry!

For Black History month, Hanwha Philly Shipyard dove into the history of influential maritime leaders of our past. Representing many of the same qualities and characteristics of our shipyard today, we’re paying homage to the advancements that without, we may not exist today. Isaac Myers became a prominent leader in the shipbuilding and trade union industries. Becoming the leader of the largest trade union in the nation as well as the first black owner of a shipyard in Baltimore, MD. James Forten was a trailblazer in Philadelphia, starting as an apprentice and working until he owned the company that taught him the trade of sailmaking. He rose as an established entrepreneur and civil rights advocate, founding, alongside his family, multiple organizations for African American people.

The first two weeks of January were full of employee connectivity! First, we launched the New Year and the new company with a major employee event, and you can catch the highlights in the video below. Second, Hanwha Philly Shipyard employees were invited to an “Intro to Hanwha Philly Shipyard” training session, where we explored what it means to be part of the Hanwha team. We united around the new vision, mission, values and principles and took a closer look at the strategy that will guide us moving forward. We feel prepared and motivated for what’s ahead, let’s go!

Move over NSMV III, you’re getting some company. Today is launch day for NSMV IV, which means it will join NSMV III in Hanwha Philly Shipyard’s Outfitting Dock where it will stay until production is completed. This is an exciting milestone because the vessel moves from production on land to water, and it is one of the last major moves before heading out for Sea Trials. Much of the interior work will be done over the next few months and we’ll watch as the unique features of the NSMV really begin to take shape. NSMV IV, named the Lone Star State, will ultimately service Texas A&M Maritime Academy in Galveston, Texas. It will replace an existing, aged training vessel and offer maritime cadets a new training facility complete with state-of-the-art simulated learning environments, living quarters, and other features that can assist with natural disaster relief missions.
