AI is getting patients in and out of the hospital faster, increasing capacity and fine-tuning staffing levels at Cleveland Clinic, OhioHealth and UC Health. The 3 systems are among those using predictive analytics and machine learning to operate more efficiently, increase revenue and improve the patient experience. Much of the savings comes from reallocating nurses to different departments based on demand. Healthcare organizations face fewer interoperability requirements under the pared-down HTI-2 rule approved this month by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The draft HTI-2 rule was originally more than 1,000 pages; the final version was only 156. The rule advances interoperability and supports the exchange and use of electronic health records under the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA). Fitch Ratings is forecasting an improved credit outlook for nonprofit hospitals in 2025. Its 2025 outlook report raises the outlook from “deteriorating” to “neutral” for the first time in 27 months. The report says hospitals have experienced steady improvements in operating margins due to limiting labor expenses, as well as stronger cash flows and equity returns. More than 500 hospitals are suing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to increase Medicare reimbursement. The lawsuits allege HHS is miscalculating the Inpatient Prospective Payment System base reimbursement rate, causing years of lowered Medicare payments to hospitals. If the federal government alters the rate, hospitals could recoup money from prior fiscal years and increase future reimbursements.
