🥨 Germany is to be led by a coalition of the CDU and SPD parties after the victory for Merz, leader of the CDU since 2022. What can we expect from German climate leadership after the election? How will this political change affect the climate policy of Germany and the European Union? Quick hints of what to expect: 1️⃣ Economic considerations should take precedence over drastic climate measures 2️⃣ Phasing out fossil fuels yes, but not too quickly. Alternatives need to be present before decommissioning fossil units 3️⃣ Encouraging Market-based climate protection, viewed as possible "guiding instruments" 4️⃣ Adjusting transport and energy transition speed: more pragmatism, proposition to reduce electricity taxes and a possible push against combustion engine ban 5️⃣ A more moderate view on the potential future of nuclear energy, possibly with new technologies or smaller modular reactors More details here https://lnkd.in/eAwz6hCh #germanelection #wahlen #CDU #SPD

Planet2050 continues to tour projects developers around the world, with a strong focus in Asia! This time with Alcom's first facility in the Philippines registered on Puro.earth. While growth for Carbon Dioxide Removals has been seen for the largest part in North America and Europe in the past 3 years, Asia is slowly but surely picking up! Why do we support this? 🥥 there are abundant biomass residues such as rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, coconut husk and shells, corn cobs, invasive species... 👷 competitive, skilled and dynamic labor force is available with smart entrepreneurs ready to take greentech solutions to the next level 🏛️ regulatory processes are faster compared to some European countries when it comes to permitting and licenses 🌏 the potential for real co-benefits is immense: the industry can provide additional revenue to local farmers and communities; and offer a solution to avoid carbon and methane emissions due to biomass field burnings or decomposition in open landfills 🚧 biochar is a very versatile material. It can be used as additive in construction materials which has a high energy and carbon profile here; or as soil amendment, improving soil health and contributing to the reduction of chemical fertilizer use. Emissions from construction and fertilizers are hotpots for intervention in Asia Let's work together to scale up this industry, bring the right expertise and financial means to get more facilities off the ground! #carbonmarkets #CDR #biochar #removal #agriculture #planet2050

The Green Climate Fund was established in 2010 under the UNFCCC to channel funding to clean energy and climate adaptation programs across the developing world. It has since approved $16 billion worth of projects. The Board approved last days 11 projects in 42 countries that are expected to provide direct support to 115.5 million people and mitigate the equivalent of 45.3 million metric tonnes of CO₂. Projects focus on various critical climate risks areas from agriculture, food security, natural ecosystem, forests or water access. In these challenging times, more investment is needed to build climate resilience, one of the pre-requisites for human population, social and economic growth. Biden and Obama had both pledged $3 billion to the GCF, and $2 billion has been already committed. Earlier in February Trump decided to cancel the $4 billion remaining, in a move never done before. “We live in an interconnected world: no country, not even the richest ones, can afford to treat climate change solely as a domestic matter" - GCF’s executive director Mafalda Duarte. https://lnkd.in/eqgTSr4U

"The world releases 175 million tonnes of greenhouse gases daily into the atmosphere. That's insane for us to allow that to continue" Al Gore at the World Economic Forum in Davos. While there was no major outcome to be expected, global leaders addressed once more the urgency of climate change, as environmental risks represent the greatest source of long-term concern, according to WEF's Global Risks Report. From Europe to South-East Asia, Planet2050 is here to make long-lasting positive impact for the Planet and the People, by unlocking opportunities when sustainability expertise, financial resources and access to environmental markets are missing. Our CEO Lucas Zaehringer is sharing observations from the Philippines where the momentum for the carbon market is growing, especially focusing on nature-based solutions, coastal ecosystem restoration but also waste management and renewable energy. When identifying project opportunities, we strongly believe in principles such as: ➡️ Spending time to understand local context and challenges ➡️ Talking to people to assess their concerns and aspirations ➡️ Developing partnerships with organizations who can make the difference on the ground ➡️ Understanding what has worked well or failed in the past based on local conditions and economic realities
Impressions of last few days in the Philippines with Planet2050 and our local partners 🤩 Climate challenges are manyfold here with issues related to deforestation, illegal logging and fishing, waste burnings, lacking water treatment capabilities, low access to energy and renewables, poor development of agriculture value chains.. The Philippines is also among the top 5 most vulnerable countries to climate change with increased risks of sea level rise, frequency of extreme weather events like typhoons, rising temperatures, and extreme rainfall. At the same time, there are also incredible resources in terms of workforce, motivated and skills people and communities, and beautiful natural resources with 7000+ islands, rich land and ocean biodiversity which deserved to be restored and preserved. This open opportunities to leverage climate finance opportunities and environmental credits working hands-in-hands with purpose-drive organizations and communities. I attended the Japan-Philippines Environment Week in Manila organized by Ministry of the Environment, Japan and the Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources Philippines officials talked about the importance of nature-based solutions and the areas of interest for the country. Japanese representatives presented cooperation opportunities especially with JCM or Article 6 credits for Japanese tech-companies in waste-to-energy, geothermal energy or sustainable materials. The carbon market in the Philippines is probably one of the least developed compared to other countries in the South-East Asia but it is catching up with - new government initiatives - upcoming carbon registry and frameworks - an ambition NDC plan - the development of some flagship nature-based projects - the signature of MoU for Article 6.2 credits with Singapore or Japan under the JCM - the election last year of the Philippines as the host country of the Board for the UN Loss and Damage Fund (L&D Fund) helping low-income countries pay for the damage caused by climate-related natural disasters. We keep watching, building and investing for the Earth, and the Philippines!
