Last month, Planet FWD attended the 2024 MIT Energy & Climate Hack. The room was filled with enthusiasm and hope for climate solutions, gathering together participants with diverse backgrounds and skills coming from across the country and world. 60 teams of students thought through how their solution would work for their target audiences for a variety of challenges. Planet FWD’s challenge, led by Abhi Rao, our Engineer Lead, was to combine computer vision with Planet FWD's APIs and data to estimate carbon footprints for products you could find while walking down an aisle in a grocery store. We were so impressed with the passion and determination of the participants in the room, all feverishly working toward creating winning solutions. Ultimately, Team "Carbonara” won the Planet FWD challenge. Their compelling pitch and working prototype consisted of an app that would partner with grocery chains and let consumers get deals for completing challenges like identifying the lowest carbon footprint product. They also designed functionality to allow users to scan any product in a grocery store and get an estimated carbon footprint. Winning 2nd overall prize for the entire event, we left feeling inspired by the brilliant young minds from our winning team, Constantin Weberpals, Pietro Belligoli, Annabelle Paradise, Aron S., Michal Starý, and all the students who participated. One thing is for sure, hope for a better future was alive and well in that room, and our team left energized and excited about the solutions that will be created by driven students like the ones who participated in the hackathon.
