CEPA and WWF PNG Advance Consultations on National Plan of Action for Marine Turtles 🐢🌊 Port Moresby, 21 November 2024 – The Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) Marine Division, in collaboration with WWF Papua New Guinea, has made significant progress in its consultations on the National Plan of Action for Marine Turtles (NPOA-MT). The consultations, which aim to strengthen marine turtle conservation efforts, have been successfully conducted across four maritime provinces, with Manus Province being the most recent. The Manus consultation took place on 19 November in Lorengau and involved representatives from all 12 wards of the province. Key stakeholders, including The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and provincial officers from the Fisheries, Environment, and Climate Change Division, actively participated. This session marks the fourth consultation, following earlier engagements in Port Moresby, Daru, Madang, and Kavieng. 🗓️ It also served as a platform to validate the findings of WWF’s 2021 Turtle Use Survey, which examined turtle consumption patterns in six provinces: Western, Central, Milne Bay, Manus, Madang, New Ireland, and East New Britain. The survey data, collected through community interviews, sheds light on the drivers of turtle meat consumption and will inform strategies to offer sustainable alternatives. ♻️ 📌About the National Plan of Action for Marine Turtles 🐢 The NPOA-MT is Papua New Guinea’s comprehensive framework for managing and conserving marine turtles in its waters. 🌏 The plan is structured around six key themes: 1. Legislation and Enforcement ⚖️ 2. Research and Data Collection 📊 3. Stakeholder Partnerships and Collaboration 🤝 4. Capacity Building 📚 5. Addressing Threats ⚠️ 6. Communication and Awareness 📢 Aligned with international agreements, including the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), the Indian Ocean–Southeast Asian Marine Turtle Memorandum of Understanding (IOSEA), and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the NPOA-MT reflects PNG’s commitment to global conservation efforts. 🌐 Mr. Luke Ndrasal, Provincial Environment and Climate Change Coordinator for Manus, commended CEPA and WWF for engaging subnational stakeholders, saying, “We need more national agencies to follow this standard and involve us at the subnational level when conducting consultations.” With only two provinces remaining—East New Britain and Milne Bay—the consultations are nearing completion. ✅ The NPOA-MT is scheduled for launch in February 2025.
