We held the third in our series of roundtables in beautiful Belfast yesterday. A rich, informed and challenging discussion was held - a report will follow but already some strong themes emerging. 🧮 statistics need to reflect reality of people crossing border for work and travel 🙏🏾 hope for new Stormont administration, but importance of scrutiny of those in power 👩🎓 skills agenda needs to be rooted in discussion with business and research community 🏛️ governments and parliaments must learn from each other with a focus on improved intergovernmental relationships. A huge thanks to those who gave up their morning to spend with the team, and to the wonderful The Open University in Ireland for hosting us. Early start to the week, heading to #Belfast for the next in the PolicyWISE cross-nation policy roundtable series. As ever we’ll be looking back - and forward - to the challenges & opportunities of cross-administration learning, structures and research. And will be looking east-west, as well as north-south. We’ll also be focusing on skills and employability issues within context of cross-border shared issues. Team effort with Catherine May Lucy Adams and The Open University in Ireland colleagues. Will be in #Belfast all week for meetings, do get in touch if you’re around. For more on the roundtable series so far, check out the reports: https://lnkd.in/eWJSCAcv https://lnkd.in/ehFBGWC2

Lucy Adams has captured the PolicyWISE contribution to #DevolutionLearningWeek in this great article. A really important part of the civil service capabilities toolbox is to understand and engage with devolution, and how administrators can work with and learn from one another. All for the greater good, hopefully! Pleased to be playing our part, thanks to Catherine May Eira Jepson and all government colleagues who do so much to arrange and deliver the learning across the week.
For the second year running, PolicyWISE has delivered training for Devolution Learning Week, the annual UK-wide event for civil servants. Our team led, and took part in sessions, to improve the understanding of why cross-nation administration work is important, how to navigate the challenges, and lessons on four-nations policy terminology. A Dickensian dreich day down the bay… so thanks to Senedd Research, Welsh Parliament for a chance to illuminate the world of advisers, policy development & research. Thanks to colleagues for comments and questions - much scope to do more to bridge research-policy worlds and bring Welsh and cross-nation policy development into the light, as others have been doing recently Lee Waters MS Richard Martin Next monthly PolicyWISE newsletter out on Tuesday - sign up on the website or let us know here. Ahead of our team trip to Belfast, we were really pleased to be included as part of the The Open University in Northern Ireland response to the Northern Ireland Executive's draft Programme for Government. Thank you John D'Arcy OBE FIOD FRSA Emma O. Dewi Knight
John D'Arcy OBE FIOD FRSA, Director of The Open University in Ireland's statement in response to the Northern Ireland Executive’s draft Programme for Government; “The Open University is uniquely placed to impactfully address the challenges identified in the draft Programme for Government. For over 50 years, we have pioneered supported distance learning providing high-quality education that reaches students in every county in Northern Ireland, helping to remove education and employment barriers. “The Executive’s willingness to take views on their proposed plan is welcome. The Open University has made a series of recommendations to strengthen the Executive’s plans to increase our prosperity and protect our planet in a fair way and to the benefit of everyone in Northern Ireland. “Crucially, in order to bring meaningful change which improves the lives of everyone, the Executive’s plans must stretch further to recognise the inherent value of lifelong learning and invest in improving accessibility to flexible and part-time higher education.” The Open University has published a response to the Northern Ireland Executive’s draft Programme for Government which you can read more here: https://ow.ly/ZWRy50U0eqb
