It's inspiring to see manufacturers like Sartorius innovating sustainably using the principles of a Circular Economy. Polycarbonate represents its own challenges when it comes to recycling, which is why designing products for sustainability and recycling is so important. By embracing circularity in the design and manufacturing of products, we can maximize the use-cycles of things like polycarbonate in bioprocessing applications to polypropylene, polystyrene, and HDPE in labs that participate in Polycarbin's circular economy. #SustainableScience #ExtendedProducerResponsibility #CircularEconomy
Advancing circular plastic use in life sciences 🔄 The recycling of sterile single-use plastics in life science research is a challenge. Now Sartorius and Covestro successfully tested the potential of closed-loop recycling of small-scale bioreactors, proving that the recycled polycarbonate can match the quality of virgin materials. The study is a step forward on the pathway to achieving more circularity in our products. Nevertheless, we are facing further challenges: How can infrastructure and processes be optimized to create sustainable solutions that meet industry's strict quality and safety requirements? Magali Barbaroux, Corporate Research Fellow at Sartorius, delves into this complex journey on the Sartorius blog. Discover why the industry's unique needs make recycling a challenge and why there's no one-size-fits-all solution: https://sar.to/z2qmj #Sustainability #LifeSciences #Recycling #Innovation #Circularity

Sustainable Innovation extends beyond life science labs. The Food and Beverage industry has seen a shift toward sustainability, being driven by consumers. The Food and Bev industry plays a vital role in our daily lives, but it also significantly impacts our planet. As consumer awareness of environmental issues grows, companies are embracing sustainable practices within their own operations. Here are some ways the industry is innovating towards a sustainable future: ♻️𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Implement PPE and disposable glove recycling programs in production environments, and adopt plastic consumable recycling initiatives in QC labs. ✅𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Develop sustainable procurement strategies for consumables used in QC labs. 🌱𝐄𝐜𝐨-𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Many brands are transitioning to recyclable packaging while reducing food waste at every stage of production. These initiatives not only benefit the environment but also align with growing consumer demand for sustainable options. #LabSustainability #SustainableFood #SustainableIsAttainable

In advance of our next Medtech Sustainability Forum in spring 2025, we will host a series of online Winter Roundtables: Partnerships Enabling Innovations in Sustainability. Join us for the first roundtable, Servicing #Labs and #Recycling Models for #Medical #Plastics, on 12/10 from 10:30am-12:00 pm. Plastics are used extensively in laboratories, providing the benefits of sterility, safety, durability and quality for the healthcare industry, but single-use plastics often come with significant environmental consequences. Only a fraction of the plastic waste is recycled, much of which is uncontaminated and recyclable. Recycling medical plastic waste is possible if properly coordinated between the healthcare and recycling industries. Hear how Polycarbin, GreenLabs Recycling, Research Recycling, Republic Services New England, and MassRecycle address the medical plastics waste problem using #sustainable and #circular practices. The roundtable will discuss Massachusetts #waste bans and the importance of #collaborations for enabling sustainable innovations in recycling medical plastics from labs. Companies will provide information on quantifying and reporting lab waste and giving second life to single use plastics by integrating recycled materials back into manufacturing supply chains. Pilots and partnerships that companies have developed to drive sustainable innovation will be discussed. Sometimes we lose the forest for the trees... Over the past several decades we have engineered equipment that has expanded the output of experimentation by orders of magnitude. But for the #LifeScienceIndustry, that exponential increase in productivity has been coupled with an exponential increase in #FossilFuels consumption... primarily in the form #SingleUsePlastics. Fortunately, communities like LRIG-NE: Laboratory Robotics Interest Group of New England have decided that single-use plastic waste should not be the cost of innovation. And for that reason, I want to thank Kalpesh Gupta for hosting last week's event highlighting #EvidenceBasedSolutions to reduce our industry's dependence on fossil fuels. I also want to thank the speakers Will Turman, Partha Krishnan, Rajiv A. Banavali, and Dionisios Hologitas for demonstrating for the rest of us how best to protect the 'forest'!

Polycarbin was founded on the hypothesis that circularizing single-use scientific plastics is better for our planet than landfilling, incinerating, and even downcycling. After three years of data collection and multiple third-party analyses, the results are staggering. In celebration of #AmericaRecyclesDay, we are excited to announce the launch of the Carbin Counter™ 4.0, now powered by the TRACI 2.1 environmental impact assessment tool developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The latest iteration of our Carbin Counter™ Platform will empower Polycarbin customers with new, environmental KPIs, including—but not limited to: ✅Global Warming Potential ✅Eutrophication Potential ✅Acidification Potential ✅Ozone Depletion Potential ✅Human Health Impacts ✅Ecotoxicity #SustainabilityIsScience #EvidenceBasedSustainability #TrueCircularity #CarbinCounter #QuantifyVerify
