About us

The Port of Bellingham is a countywide independent special purpose government located in Whatcom County overseen by three nonpartisan elected commissioners. It was created by a countywide vote in 1920. From a beginning focused mainly on increasing shipping on the Bellingham waterfront, the port has expanded into a multi-purpose government with operations in Bellingham, Blaine and Sumas. The port supports economic development throughout Whatcom County. An independent county-wide government, the port operates all of Whatcom County’s transportation terminals, the two major marinas and a deep-draft marine terminal. The port also manages over 1,600 acres of public land with about 250 local business tenants. Port and tenant operations provide over 4,000 jobs in Whatcom County. One of the largest port operations is the Bellingham International Airport that annually serves about 500,000 passengers per year and offers numerous non-stop destinations with service provided by Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Airlines and Horizon Airlines. The port's marinas in Bellingham and Blaine provide moorage for 2,000 recreational and commercial boats and hundreds of people work for the numerous marine trades businesses that operate on port real estate. The port also operates the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, serving the Alaska State Ferry, private passenger ferries and charter vessels. Located nearby, the port's Fairhaven Transportation Station serves passengers on Amtrak and Greyhound.

Exciting news for Bellingham! We’re thrilled to announce that the Port of Bellingham will receive 17.9 million dollars via the Federal Governments RAISE Grant Program. US Senator Patty Murray and Representative Rick Larsen have announced that Bellingham has been awarded the RAISE FY 2024 Infrastructure Grant for their Rail Connection to BNSF and Canada's CPKC, linking us to over 32,500 miles of track in 28 states and 3 Canadian provinces. This infrastructure upgrade is set to ease to the congestion in Vancouver BC and the greater Puget Sound. Over the next 2 years, we’ll be investing 45 million dollars in infrastructure improvements to the Bellingham Shipping Terminal; including dredging to 35ft, new decking, fender piles, fenders and a modern rail connection to serve multiple cargo types. With 23 acres and 80,500 sf of warehousing space available, we’re ready to expand commerce opportunities. Thank you to all those that supported the Port’s efforts for this very competitive award. We are excited to work with many new customers in the near future! #BellinghamShippingTerminal https://lnkd.in/g2zduyQz

Approximately three years after Southwest Airlines announced it would launch flights to Bellingham International Airport, Southwest announced they will cease service to Bellingham after August 4, 2024, citing delays in Boeing jet deliveries. Port of Bellingham Director of Aviation Kip Turner said, “We are saddened by this unfortunate news and will look forward to working with Southwest again in the future once their fleet needs are met. Bellingham International Airport will continue being served by Allegiant Air, San Juan Air and Alaska Airlines, which deliver frequent and reliable value service to our corner of the Pacific Northwest with the rest of North America, bringing low fares to Bellingham and our neighbors in British Columbia.” Port of Bellingham Executive Director Rob Fix said, “Our Aviation Director and his team continually work with airlines to promote the Bellingham – Vancouver, Canada market. The departure of Southwest will be felt by our community; however, we are confident that the Bellingham International Airport is poised for additional new growth as the team continues to work with both existing and new entry airlines to deliver destinations our customers want.” Alaska flies daily to Seattle/Tacoma, while Allegiant has nonstop service to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Oakland, Palm Springs, Phoenix (Mesa), and San Diego.

Happy Earth Day! Whatcom County is fortunate to have many great resources to help individuals and businesses reduce environmental impacts. To name just a few, the Port works with Sustainable Connections to host Zero Waste Events, uses Sanitary Service Company for compost and recycling, has Ridwell pick up hard-to-recycle items, and works with Smart Trips to replace vehicle-trips . Our sustainability committee meets regularly to discuss how we can do things better and talk about great projects the Port is working on like a new 100kW rooftop solar system at Bellingham International Airport. For the Port, every day is Earth Day because a sustainable economy depends on a healthy environment.
