PCA Project Profile: Lower-carbon portland-limestone cement (PLC) delivered a successful capital improvement project in Humboldt, Kansas. The project began with Type I/II portland cement for the initial footings but transitioned to PLC for the majority of the work. In this first-time experience working with PLC for the seasoned concrete crews, they poured 600 to 700 yards at a time, testing after each one. When evaluating finishability and set times compared to portland cement mixes, the crews reported no significant difference. Compressive strength reached 4,400 psi at 7 days, 5,500 psi at 28 days, and 5,800 psi at 56 days. As sustainability reshapes the industry, stakeholders—owners, designers, producers, and contractors—must stay informed about evolving practices and materials that can support sustainable construction.
