Building people power in cities across the US to transform our country into one rooted in liberation, abundance, and joy
About us
We’re a community of leaders, organizers, and strategists forging multi-racial feminist democracy and economies in our cities and towns. Through local organizing, we’re sparking national transformation rooted in abundance, common good, freedom, and joy. Our network of 20 grassroots affiliates weaves strategic alliances and alignments amongst labor, neighborhood, housing, racial justice, faith, ethnic-based, and environmental organizations. Together, we’re building people power and people’s institutions. We win innovative public policy and rein in greedy corporations to realize our collective freedom and liberation. Our work is grounded in replacing the interlocking chains of oppression — economic exploitation, white supremacy, gender violence — with systems built for human dignity and authentic democracy. We believe that everyday people can transform the economy, government, and public goods in our communities.

Join us March 5 in DC to discuss how algorithmic management technologies are shaping one of the largest labor sectors in the country — healthcare — and what happens when nurses use AI to bid against each other for shifts. Learn how the surveillance technologies that are uprooting care work are the same tools that threaten consumer prices. Explore another case of Big Tech’s multi-pronged assault on the regulatory state. And (maybe) build consensus about what comes next. Veena Dubal, David Seligman, Mark Graham, Funda Ustek Spilda, and Chenjerai Kumanyika will guide us through the new tech wilderness and how to make sense of findings in the Fairwork US 2025 Report. “When we talk about these data issues, we’re not just talking about technology,” says our Senior Staff Attorney, Minsu Longiaru. “We spend most of our lives in the workplace. This is about our human rights.” Read about what growing surveillance tech and algorithms mean for workers, featuring our partners Action Center on Race and the Economy & Athena Coalition 👇 https://lnkd.in/eigSS--k

Sometimes being in an entirely new place, surrounded by a different way of living and moving through the world, can give us fresh ideas and inspiration. That's how it felt when we organized a trip to Vienna and Berlin last year, where we brought together a group of housing organizers, elected officials, and city staff to learn about social housing. For Delishia Danielle Porterfield, Nashville’s Councilwoman At Large, using public land for public good—like housing and transit—is central to her vision of a thriving Nashville. Traveling to Vienna and seeing how the city's housing options prioritized people's needs affirmed her belief that we can change what our cities look like here in the US. Terrence worked for over 20 years in the fast food industry, often working two or three jobs at a time, and still struggled to make ends’ meet. He knew things had to change, and started organizing with his fellow workers. Back in 2013, he walked off the job for the first time at Burger King to go on strike with Fight for $15. He hasn’t turned back since. Now, he's organizing with Missouri Workers Center to win working folks what they need to thrive. Ms. Willa is proof that no matter our age or what we think about ourselves, every one of us has power and can help make change for our communities. Ms. Willa is a 70-year old retiree and renter in Colorado. After a massive rent hike last year, she realized that she would only have $50 a month to cover all her other basic needs. After talking with her neighbors and getting connected with UNITED FOR A NEW ECONOMY, she saw firsthand the power and hope that comes through organizing collectively. Now, Ms. Willa is a fierce organizer and leader for housing justice, and she's not slowing down anytime soon. Our 2024 Year in Review features powerful organizing and big wins from across the country, but it also spotlights some of the incredible people who make this work happen. One of those leaders is Kevin Moore: a social studies teacher, member of the Chicago Teachers Union, and Chair of CTU's Housing Committee. When Kevin first moved to Chicago two decades ago, it wasn’t his intention to become an educator or to become involved in major fights around the city’s education and housing systems. Now, he’s campaigning for transformative housing solutions and leading critical contract negotiations with Chicago Public Schools. Read Kevin's story and learn why he's doing this work and what he believes is possible for the city: https://lnkd.in/dUPY92Dq #chicago #housing #teachers #socialhousing

I am incredibly proud to share PowerSwitch Action's 2024 Year in Review! Amidst all of the challenges of the last year, there was so much powerful organizing and important victories happening across our network. From Uber and Lyft drivers uniting across different cities and challenging Uber, to renters taking on corporate landlords and coming up with really innovative housing solutions, to workers in Amazon warehouses, fast food restaurants, hotels and more fighting for good jobs (and winning!). These kinds of organizing projects and campaigns give me a lot of hope, and they also show how our network and our movement at large must move forward. There is so much at stake and we are entering truly daunting times. This is a moment that calls for deep solidarity. It requires all of us—organizers, movement allies, and philanthropic partners—to act with courage, humility about where we need to dig deeper, a commitment to moving in unity, and a conviction that we can make real the world we dream of. I hope you’ll take a look at our report, and find inspiration in the powerful work taking place in cities and states all across our country. https://lnkd.in/eSRdCRGM
