Over 8 out of 10 NYC public schools have no student journalism program whatsoever. Press Pass NYC equips under-resourced schools with the free faculty training, student resources, and program support necessary to start a sustainable school newspaper and/or news site. Seeing a school newspaper in every public school in New York City, in the form that’s best for that school and those students, is how our approach will and does make all the difference.

“Me and my friend were at the park when a group of older teens acting violently demanded his phone, and he gave it up. I don’t know why they targeted us, especially since we were young, but I’m just happy they didn’t take anything that I had.” This new article in The 411, the student news site at Baruch College Campus High School explores why teens don't feel so safe on the streets of NYC. https://lnkd.in/eAAJm5b9Press Pass NYC is proud to partner with this student news site.
Thank you Liz Kelly Nelson for describing so perfectly the importance of providing opportunities for all students to not only learn about journalism, but practice AND participate in this rapidly evolving space as creators and audience as part of their education.
"No matter how many guidelines, opportunities for training or statements about fact-based and ethical journalism, there will always be organizations and individuals who are just irresponsible, sloppy or nefarious. The proliferation of AI-generated news is making this even worse. Helping consumers, especially young consumers, understand how to find credible information is just as important as training creators. That’s why work being done by hundreds of high school journalism program teachers and groups like CalMatters , Press Pass NYC and others is crucial. It’s not just about creating a pipeline for future journalists, but about helping young minds think critically about all of their information sources."
News Strategy, Creator Journalism & Media Consumption
It's a new year and that means we have 12 months to continue to push for the healthy evolution of news and information sources. In my first piece for 2025, I write about the evolving definition of journalism and why we need to overcome fear of change to embrace and partner with new voices.

I am excited to share I have been welcomed as a panelist for the NYC Youth Journalism Coalition Journalism for All Conference at the CUNY Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism.
The initiative is providing training and support to 30 teachers committed to starting journalism programs at their public high schools. Unfortunately in New York City, just under 27% of public high schools have some form of student media. Additionally, only 7 of the 100 schools with the highest poverty rates have a student publication.
Since high school I have been working to combat these news desserts within the NYC, so students have the opportunity to express themselves and have the tools to navigate the information they are consuming. I have worked as a Student Advisory Board Founding Member with Press Pass NYC to provide resources and tools to students and high school to create sustainable newspapers. Then with PEN America and Teens For Press Freedom providing workshops and resources to helps teens become critical consumers of media and be informed of their rights to free speech and expression.
Again thank you to the NYC Youth Journalism Coalition and other partners!

Student news publications give teens an opportunity to write about what whatever interests them. At the Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology, 11th grader Deanndra Sampson is writing about vaping for her new student news site, The Gateway Times. The publication started this school year with support from Press Pass NYC.

Congratulations to the team at Noticias de 218! It's the new student news site of PS/IS 218, the Rafael Hernandez Dual Language Magnet School in the Bronx. The student journalism publication launched this school year with help from Press Pass NYC. The middle schoolers published their first articles in December, including this lovely profile of their principal. We can't wait to see what they do in 2025! https://lnkd.in/erTC8d3u
Yep, think we will see the momentum for professional journalism being pushed by young journalists (and their journalism educators) who are in the classroom now — but headed for news desks in 3-5 years. Florida A&M's journalism dean Mira Lowe makes excellent predictions about how this can happen
And related — such an urgent need *right now* to provide much more structural and financial support for scholastic and youth journalism across the board.

Happy New Year! How about a little good news? Thirty NYC public high schools will pilot a new journalism curriculum starting in September. We will help teens learn to value and trust the news media, building a more diverse pipeline of talent AND a new audience. This is how to combat disinformation.
