Big news from Duke! 🎉 Thanks to an extraordinary $50 million gift from an anonymous donor, Duke will soon have its very own proton therapy center—bringing this cutting-edge cancer treatment directly to patients here in North Carolina. 💙
“Proton therapy is the standard of care for children who need radiotherapy for a brain tumor, and the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke is delighted to have one coming onsite at Duke. Moreover, this will benefit many adults with cancer, including brain tumors," says Henry Friedman, MD.
This new center will provide transformative care for patients who currently need to travel long distances for proton therapy. This advanced treatment, effective across various cancers, offers a highly precise form of radiation therapy that minimizes side effects and protects healthy tissue. Proton therapy’s targeted approach is particularly critical for treating sensitive areas such as the brain and head, ensuring reduced damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Expected to open by 2029, the Duke Proton Center will serve approximately 800 patients annually, offering hope and advanced treatment options for children and adults alike. 💛
