An internationally renowned centre of excellence, known for conducting high-quality research to improve people’s lives.
About us
Good primary care forms the foundation of the UK National Health Service (NHS). 90% of NHS contacts happen in primary care, with general practice alone providing over 300 million consultations a year. Southampton Primary Care Research Centre (PCRC) is an international centre of excellence for research in primary care. It is one of just nine institutions that make up the NIHR School for Primary Care Research. Southampton PCRC includes a multidisciplinary team of researchers including academic GPs, sociologists, psychologists, statisticians, pharmacists, data scientists, and health sciences researchers. We work collaboratively with many institutions and groups, including other academic departments, NIHR infrastructure (CRN, RDS, BRC, ARC), Southampton Clinical Trials Unit, and partners in charitable organisations and industry. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework PCRC achieved the highest rating in our unit of assessment (UoA2) for outputs with a Grade Point Average of 3.71 and 94% considered as 'internationally excellent' or 'world leading'.

On #WorldAidsDay we are highlighting the success of Igugu Lethu (‘Our Treasure’), led by Professor Nuala McGrath, a leading expert in HIV epidemiology from the University of Southampton. Igugu Lethu was developed to increase the uptake of couples HIV testing and counselling (CHTC) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province of South Africa , an area where 19% of men and 41% of women were reported to be living with HIV as of 2017. 56% of participants chose to take part in CHTC, significantly improving upon previous intervention rates. Through CHTC, couples gain mutual awareness of their HIV status, helping them to face the future together with informed planning and mutual support. The investigator team have shared their findings with the South African National Aids Council (SANAC) and participated in SANAC discussions and webinar ‘Towards a people centered approach to care’, contributing to ongoing refinement of the 2023-2028 National Strategic Plan for HIV, TB and STIs. This work exemplifies the power of research to drive meaningful change in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. Funded by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), in collaboration with HSRC (Human Sciences Research Council)

🌡️ Specific combinations of long-term conditions play a major role in NHS ‘winter pressures’, driving significant increases in hospital admissions and mortality, according to new research led by the University of Southampton. This study, recently published in BMJ Medicine, found that individuals with conditions like cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic kidney disease, and type 2 diabetes face up to an 11x higher risk of winter hospitalisation. And those with kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and osteoarthritis are 24x more likely to die compared to those without. “These findings will help inform more targeted winter planning,” says lead author Dr. Nazrul I., “enabling resources to be allocated where they’re needed most.” Read the full story here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eRzbVdzD #NHS #Healthcare #Research #WinterPressures #LongTermConditions #UniversityofSouthampton #HealthOutcomes #BMJMedicine #Epidemiology

Allow me share a piece of my happiness with you 🤗 ~ So I went to this great conference by Primary Care Diabetes Society (PCDS) that brings together numerous experts and people working to improve diabetes outcomes across the board. I presented a poster on our qualitative review that illustrates contextual barriers to self-management and some mechanisms responsible for negative outcomes. ……AND…..I won 🥳🥳🥳(end of story 😅). FYI - “Diabetes often brings along its siblings - other long term conditions” making outcomes even worse especially if the social determinants of health (age, race, 💷💰…) are not in your favour⚖️⚖️. 🚨So, understand your risk and take those baby steps to incorporating healthier habits.
