🚨 BREAKING NEWS: We’re thrilled to share that Leather Naturally and Leather Working Group have submitted a combined dataset, based on life cycle assessment studies carried out by SPIN 360, which has now been adopted by the Higg Material Sustainability Index (MSI) (from Worldly). The new dataset, which was added to the Higg MSI in October 2024, has resulted in the following updates: ➡️ The environmental impact of bovine leather is now between 55-67% lower than the previous MSI value for leather ➡️ The Global Warming Potential of bovine leather has reduced by 60%, from 36.8 points down to 14.6 points! “Leather Naturally undertook this initiative on behalf of the industry to provide an updated perspective on leather manufacturing. We thank the Leather Working Group for their partnership and celebrate this positive result, which is now recognized in the updated Higg MSI,” said Kim Sena, Head of Leather Naturally’s Impact Team. This shows real change and paves the way towards a more nuanced understanding of the impact and sustainability of leather as a material. We are thrilled to confirm that Carl Flach of ISA TanTec has been re-confirmed to our Board and Mark Roughley of PrimeAsia Leather Company has been confirmed as a new member of the Leather Naturally Management Board. After completing a first term of three years, Carl Flach has been reappointed to the Leather Naturally Supervisory Council, following a members vote in August 2024. Carl is Senior Director for Operational Strategies at ISA TanTec. Mark Roughley has been confirmed to the LN Management Board for a first term. Mark has over 20 years’ experience in Product Management within the footwear and leather industry, and currently acts as the European Brand Manager with PrimeAsia. He replaces former Management Board member, Kim Sena. We'd like to thank Kim Sena of JBS for his commitment to the organisation, where he led the Impact Team. Debbie Burton, Chair of the LN Management Board, says: “Kim has made a huge contribution as the lead of the Impact Team. Although we will miss his wisdom and experience directly on the Management Board, we are pleased to confirm that he will continue to contribute to the wider Impact Team, supporting Aukje Berden.”

Camille Mori, MPA Mori, our Chief Sustainability Officer, joined an expert panel at the LWG Stakeholder Meeting in Milan earlier this month to discuss “Reducing Impact.” The panel brought together leaders from the leather, footwear, and chemical industries to discuss and exchange insights on hots spots within the tanning industry such as responsible chemical management, developing circular solutions, and increasing renewable energy use. A big thank you to Leather Working Group for facilitating open and transparent conversations among competitors, suppliers, and customers.
