Geospatial technology [#GIS - as a part of this] is a critical decision-making tool, enabling the collection, analysis, and visualization of spatial data to uncover patterns and relationships. Using #GIS, mapping techniques such as choropleth and proportional symbol maps provide intuitive ways to represent complex data. Together, these mapping techniques allow decision-makers to assess trends, compare regions, and communicate insights effectively, supporting evidence-based planning in sectors like urban development, public health, and disaster management. These mapping methods are highly relevant for addressing global and local challenges. For example, they can reveal patterns of social vices and/or spread of a pandemic, among other issues. Raw data is transformed into accessible visual formats, simplifying complex problems, helping stakeholders allocate resources, design targeted interventions, and improve outcomes. For some weeks, we have facilitated the training of interested professionals on the use of #GIS for various research and analytical purposes, with our students working in different fields including epidemiology, agroforestry, environmental consultancy, among others. We share some snapshots from the sessions we have had, exploring various software including #ArcGIS and #QGIS for analyzing data structures, geocoding, feature metric computations, topographic mapping, hydrological analysis, analyzing patterns and clusters, climate data processing, among others. #PrimeTEC #GIS #DataAnalysis #Research #Development #Technology

Vegetation indices are important tools in remote sensing used to assess the health, density, and distribution of vegetation over vast areas. These indices combine spectral bands captured by sensors onboard satellites, particularly the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands, which are sensitive to vegetation properties. Using these indices, we can monitor ecosystems, detect changes in land cover, and support sustainable land management practices. Here are some insights on three vegetation indices: • Normalized Difference Vegetation Index • Enhanced Vegetation Index • Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index Image credit: Mashford Mahute

Was working earlier in the day and decided to do a quick visualization and comparison of Nigeria’s landscape from 1972 to 2020. The difference (as shown in the image) I don’t think would need an explanation. Howbeit, imagine the next 30-50 years (perhaps more) and what will be left. With the devastating impacts of climate change, coupled with other socioeconomic challenges, the landscapes and ecosystems are constantly being threatened. We must prioritize ecosystem restoration and conservation, climate adaptation, and find a balance between urbanization, development and environmental protection. #Nigeria #Research #ClimateAdaptation #EcosystemRestoration #Conservation #Development
