I once read a stat that changed my career: only 5-15% of online learning content actually gets completed. Think about that. If your customers only consumed 5-15% of your product, you’d be out of business. Imagine buying a gallon of milk and drinking just a sip. Meanwhile, corporations and institutions spend $200 billion a year on online learning content. It's the corporate equivalent of a gym membership: everyone pays for it, and it feels good, but nobody uses it. I wondered, is all media like this? I looked at other media — TV shows, movies, podcasts. The good stuff. Media designed to engage us sees 60-80% completion rates. That’s when the obvious question emerged: What if learning content was as engaging as entertainment? Primerli was born out of this question. We wanted to build learning content that people actually finish - content crafted on principles of engagement first and teaching second. We had to rewrite all the traditional rules about instructional design. Forget “learning objectives.” Instead, all of our effort goes into storylines, suspense, visual hooks—all optimized to grab attention and keep it. We call this ‘engagement-first content.’ And it works. In a world where “online learning” sends people running (thank you mandatory compliance trainings for the great reputation), our primers see 60-90% voluntary completion rates. Learners come back asking for additional content. The problem is that creating good content takes a ridiculous amount of effort. For every hour of content, we invest 500 person-hours. It’s painfully slow and expensive but worth every second when people actually use it—and love it. Here is a crazy idea: what if companies spent the same amount of money but invested in less content – just better content? I think everyone, including learners, L&D leaders, and vendors, would be better off.
