On SpotDraft's The Abstract, Matthew Wheatley shares that less than half of Fortune 1000 companies have a dedicated legal ops function, leaving significant room for growth. He sees a real opportunity for legal professionals, despite a challenging job market. Check out the clip. Full episode 🔗 here: https://lnkd.in/gtQBDY7u
Director of Legal Ops was one of the 20 fastest-growing job titles in the US from 2019 - 2023 according to LinkedIn data. Is the future as bright? I know many in this space who feel like we’re in the middle of a legal ops pullback – layoffs, fewer new opportunities, less strategic focus. Tyler Finn, Kevin Cohn, and I discussed this on The Abstract a few weeks ago. I understand it’s complicated, but here are a few reasons I think the current landscape isn’t a reflection of where we’re headed: 📌 Some highly visible OGs in this space have been at it for a long time, but this is generally a brand-new function. According to the Blickstein Group, of companies that hired a legal ops professional from 2019-2023, more than half were hiring one for the first time. 📌 The challenging job market isn’t specific to legal ops. Many major news outlets have reported that we’re in a “White-Collar Job Recession.” According to LinkedIn data, legal opportunities in general were down 8 percent last year compared to 2018. 📌 Over half of the Fortune 1000 still don’t have a fully dedicated legal operations professional. At many of these companies, attorneys are attempting to fill this gap. When I speak with lawyers in this position, they see huge opportunities for efficiency gains. But they’re overwhelmed by their dual functions and don’t believe general biz ops teams are specialized enough to support legal. TLDR: It makes sense that white-hot growth followed by a significant slowdown would fuel some frustration and identity questions. But in my opinion, there’s still huge opportunity left to seize, and a strategic legal ops function will be best positioned to do that for most organizations.
